Thomas is a guy I'm most excited about. He's probably going to be a SS, but I think our safety roles are sort of flipped, I see him being more like Clark. Seen a lot of Bob Sanders comparisons. Can't wait to see him in preseason (since Troy shouldn't play a snap!).

Me too, also Hawthorne, he's getting a lot of praise from Lake to and just found out he was once a projected first rounder, didn't know that.

Back to Shamarko, I wasn't expecting any signings until after June first, reports said they wouldn't have any money until Colons contract comes off the books. Glad we got him on board though

Yes, I was surprised to see this so early. Still, very happy he's signed and very happy with the pick!

His signing has little effect on the cap right now. Really, any rookie from the 4th round on doesn't displace any of the "top 51" salaries, and only their relatively small prorated SB's impact the cap.

Agreed. I was hoping we'd get a safety, projected one in the 3rd or 4th rd mainly due to the depth of the position and was thinking more on the lines of P. Thomas. The team and its scouts decided S. Thomas was the choice and since they know more than me I'm excited to see what he does in Pre-season. Hopefully his impact this year will be on ST and during his limited snaps in relief at safety.

I've been reading that between Shamarko and V. Willimas that Steeler fans can expect to have something we aren't accustomed to, a good ST unit. They say those guys are going to blow people up.

Am I the only one who doesn't want to see much of these guys in the preseason because of the freak injuries that happen to last years draft class. Maybe a series or two in each game but nothing that puts them out there as a risk early. Especially if some of them are expected to push for starting jobs.

I hear you... but you can't protect guys forever, you gotta let 'em play and see how they do. Guys like Jones and Bell will be pushing for a starting spot, but they're in a competition still. They're going to get snaps and have to impress when they're out there.

Need reps, can't worry about injuries, part of the game, very rarely is it so catastrophic that it can be career threatening like Spence.

your right, alot of guys will need all the reps they can get before the season starts. kind of a catch 22. the vets need to play little though. troy, ben, ike, clark, keisel, timmons, pouncey. the rest, have at it.

The new CBA really hurts the younger guys, with so little reps to go around, the vets get most of them. I don't know how much it factors in for mini camps but during the season in practice, the bulk of the reps go to the starters. The players didn't help their younger brethren when they negotiated that into the CBA. Pre season games are the best chance for rookies to get work in.

If it was another draft class I would say let them play till they fall apart however this draft was one that filled some needs and with the cap issues having a rash of guys hurt in the preseason could lead to another sub-par performance on the season. It is my hope that the rookies and the sophomore players come through the preseason healthy and whole and help contribute cause plan B doesn't look good.

I get your concerns but they could just as easily get hurt in the first game of the season. Like I said, these guys don't get a whole lot of opportunities to get work in.

i think we need as much work out of them as we can get. we have so many 1 year contracts, that many rookies, first year and UDFA's are going to be the core of the team next year. they have to learn this year and make alot of progress.

our whole O-line is going to be predicatted on young talent stepping in and up. from starters to backups. many of the young guys could be fighting this preseason for the chance to fight for a starting spot next year. the next man up is going to be younger and younger now.

If he can play like Carnell says, we may have a steal. We shall see. He is not afraid to hit, YEA

I like that......... might make for a great nickname... is it time to start attaching nicknames yet, or are we going to wait until the roster is set?

i believe on him we can attach away, he's not going anywhere. i'm concerned about depth behind HIM. i'm not sure if cromartie-smith has anymore PS eligibility left. ventrone, holley, and taglienetti ( i'm sure i destroyed that spelling). possibly gay for part of a game if needed, but not at any legnth.
