Warren has an opportunity here. If he can seize it, he’ll be the #1 for two more seasons and maybe get another extension. If it turns out he can’t handle the job then KJ will get the opportunity and Warren will just go back to being a complimentary back.

Why? They are both under contract.

Boswell though wants an extension. Heyward wants more money. Of the two, I'd sign Boswell first.

Boswell has won Pittsburgh a number of games within the past three seasons. Hell, he won the team their first game in 2024.

So now we know where the Steelers fall for RB contracts. Najee was probably looking for $8M+ per season. Steelers paid Warren about $6M.

Or was it the scheme fit that was the deciding factor?

Every season Harris was the lead back his efficiency declined. And yes, there were multiple factors. But it wasnt something you want to throw a bunch of guaranteed money at.

    Schematic fit in this case.

Najee wasn't going to fit in the Zone Blocking Scheme that Arthur Smith employs. For that matter, of the two, Warren was the better fit.

I agree he is very valuable and is an elite in the NFL. He has 2 years left on a deal and the Steelers usually don't give up money until the last season which I believe they will do.

Heyward is another matter. He wants a money grab because he see's the writing on the wall with all the solid young guns now on the defensive line.
He signed a two year contract extension after crying he would sign with another team accenting the clowns. This year was totally guaranteed. He also said if he made All Pro he would be back at the table and they chuckled after signing said contract.
He ran out of gas the 4 last games of the season so I guess he got the All Pro nod before that. Then in the playoff game he was constantly chasing Henry down. Was the first line of a 299 yard thrashing. Not solely blaming him but when the spotlight gets hottest you need to be elite. All Pro elite.

I agree Boz is worth giving up more dough they did advance some to Antonio Brown before. Heyward not so much. Just my opinion. Its not my money.

I don't think injury should be a factor quite honestly since pretty much everyone gets injured at some point even the great ones like Heyward, Ward and Highsmith. Najee has never missed any games because of an injury until now with his eye injury. I think not being injured at some point in a players career is akin to finding a unicorn. Of course if a player rarely sees the field because of an injury that would signal an opportunity for the Steelers to move on from said player.

I don't mind if players get hurt. As the saying goes in the game "injuries are a part of the games just like blocking and tackling." Jaylen getting banged up, by itself isn't the problem I have. How often he got banged up in 2024 though does give me pause.

Same goes for Nick Herbig. 2024 was also not kind to Nick. Highsmith isn't exempt from this either though his groin injuries have been a major problem for some time now.

    Agreed.

I'd pay Boz first. Kickers are already difficult to find as it is. Once you have one that is among the very best?! Keep them.

Granted, finding an elite level IDL is more difficult due to the tremendous amount of both skill and athletic abilities they must possess. Cameron Heyward does classify as one. That said, at his age, it is very fair to question as to how many more seasons he has in him; assuming we are either at the end or rapidly approaching it.

Its does seem the OLBer room generally has injury issues whether its just nagging or a bit more serious. Spot on about Highsmith. It is a concern.

Hopefully the modern day warrior todays Jack Sawyer doesn't fall into that category.

I do believe in that, and
You are correct I do do(lol, I said dodo) this, but if I remember correctly You are one of the guys that always disagrees when I say it.
For example: when I said Mason didn't get a fair chance against Trubisky, and Pickett because of money spent, and draft capital You said it was bull$hit. So this is exactly why I said what I said. It can't be bull$hit when people only want it to be.

I agree with the draft pedigree, and money spent, but I know many on here that when I bring that up they say it's bull$hit, and that's why I said what I said.

This makes Warren a pretty successful undrafted free agent. If he has a good season this year, he's going to be creeping into that 'best of' udfa's category.

I agree Highsmith should be on the list as well. He missed 6 games for a groin injury and then ankle in November

    So who would you extend?!

Or would you let both play out their contract?!

This is exactly right, this doesnt look too me like a vote of confidence, this looks like, hey you where the cheapest of the two and we need a place holder who knows the offense so we can get our draft pick up to speed. If Johnson progresses I wouldnt be surprised if he cuts into more and more of Warrens work as the season goes on. With that being said, I hope Warren explodes, go Steelers!
