I recently watched a video that was sort of a round table discussion on fishing with live bait and/or 'people food' like hot dogs, breads, different meats, etc.

When they were discussing catfish, they said it doesn't matter which bait you use but to soak it first in cherry kool-aid. I have never heard that before but they all agreed. Any of you ever soak catfish bait in cherry kool-aid before? Results?


I like to bank fish so not much bass fishing. They seemed to be high on using live frogs when bass fishing. Granted there may be lures and such that work better, but as far as live bait what would you use?

 

I rarely fish with bait. When I do it’s usually when we’ve taken a multi day trip on some river. Then we will just catch some bluegill, or small spotted bass put them on a circle hook and let it ride. Eventually the big cats will find them and pretty much just hook themselves. Kind of like jug fishing.

 

When I was a kid in Florida my brother and I would fish or crab just about every day. I've never heard of anybody soaking bait in cherry kool-aid. I only catch catfish by accident anyway. Not a fan of cleaning those. But my father and his friends would go specifically for catfish. They used chicken livers usually.
There was a borrow hole near our house that had filled with water and someone actually built a small floating dock on it. My brother and I would sit there and catch/release small brim with just line, hook, and little balls of bread.
We would tie chicken pieces to the bottom of our crab nets and take home 2-5gal buckets filled with blue crab. Those things were everywhere. Some old dude told us once to leave the chicken outside overnight and let it get good and rank. But we did just fine without having to deal with nasty rank chicken.
I never had any luck with a casting net or surf fishing. Now I live in the real south and I'm still a bank fisher.

 

Don't drink the Kool-Aid

Since I live by the ocean I felt I had to fish. I gave it up years ago but I kid you not when I say I caught at least 200 sand sharks. Fished the bay with a piece of squid and pulled them in one after another. Good think they don't have teeth. Now days I live one minute from a lake but I don't fresh water fish.

 

There’s nothing stopping you from bass fishing from the bank. Yes, bass do love frogs, snakes, ducklings, small turtles…. Basically anything they can fit in their mouth

 

Kool-aid works, but so does many things in catching catfish, but only certain kind. There are some catfish that actually prefer live bait, and aren't strictly scavengers.
As for bass, I always go by what is a local food source to where I'm fishing, and at least try to replicate that. Example: if I see shad schooling, I go that color, and actions, or spring frog, then that, and so on. It always seems to work

 

Not a fan of seafood and I live close to a fairly large size fishing industry. Tough and dangerous job. Maybe a Flounder once in awhile.

I guess you fresh water fishermen eat your catch. Is there much of a difference in taste between ocean fish and fresh water fish??? Are they boney??

 

Growing up, we'd go camping and trout fishing on our vacations. Dad was an accomplished fly fisherman. We'd fish strictly cricks, streams or rivers. I got hooked and decided early to make fishing a career. I spent many years in the sportfishing industry before switching to cruising yachts. I like eating catfish but not Largemouth bass. Love trout but can barely choke down salmon. Of course, there's not much better than fresh wahoo on the grill with garlic butter! I've fished for just about all species of fish fresh and salt. As they say, a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work...............unless fishing is your work!

 

Yes there is a difference, just like there is a difference between how all fresh water, and salt water fish taste. Crappie, and catfish tastes nothing a like, but neither does a tuna, or a grouper taste the same.

 

I fished lake El Salto with some of the locals years ago. We didn't catch any of the monster bass in there but, a 1-2 lb. bass on most every cast. I wanted to release them but one of the other guys wanted to keep them for ceviche. Spoiler alert: Largemouth bass does NOT make good ceviche!

 

What you say is completely true. I just find that the shallow water 'trash' like logs and limbs and reeds, stuff like that, make it really tough to ever land a bass. They like to get your line hung up on all of it. Crappie and brim put up a lot less fight typically. I mean I don't specifically fish for bass from the bank.


You can catch them in spring near where the small streams enter the lakes. They will tend to gather in those areas making it easier.

 

Then fish a spinnerbait. Or rig something weedless

 

I fillet crappie also, and My cousin knows a way to clean the trout, and grab the head, and pulls all the bones out. I've tried it, but I can't do it, but he can every time. I think he's keeping some secret of it from me. LoL

 

After watching the Slippery Stairs Championship on ESPN 8, I feel this thread could absolutely be in "Other Sports" section because Fishing is much more a sport then some of the crap they are coming up with today. Fishing sure the hell has been around longer then any other sport.

Anyhow, I'm floating in a little inlet by me and an old guy (got to stop calling people in my age group old) was fishing. He told me the Cod were running through. In the short time I floated by him he pulled up 7 of them.

 

I have had people ask me why would I watch other people fish on tv. I don't, but I have in the past. I've listened to people fishing on the radio before. Lol. You never know what little bit of info you will remember at some point and it helps you in some way. These were pre-internet days of course.


I used to golf a lot. Before wife and kids, a lot. Most of my learning the game came from watching guys hit tough shots or listening to them talk about their tough shots.


Always wanted to shoot a round with Arnold Palmer and then go fishing with Jerry Reed.

I’ve watched a fair amount of major league fishing. Kind of an interesting concept where instead of you’re 5 largest fish it’s every fish caught over a 1lb. Person with highest total after day moves onto next round.

 

I fished the Bisbee Black and Blue tournament in Cabo a couple of times and have several friends who have won it. Millions of dollars on the line. It's gotten so cut throat that it's not fun to me. I really preferred when we fished the Marlin club tournaments in SO. Cal where the prizes were trophys and rods and reels. Those tournaments were fun, especially the ones at Catalina!

 

I've fished about 10 big tournaments back in the day. I've never won most weight, but twice I won biggest Bass.

 

I’ve fished in a few dozen kayak fishing tournaments. Even qualified for the kayak bass fishing national championship several years back. What used to be a lot of fun has turned into this cutthroat bullcrap where people are cheating. A lot of the bass tournaments are grass roots events. So you’re fishing against your friends and acquaintances. It’s amazing to me to see how many people are perfectly fine ripping off their friends.

In kayak tournaments the scoring is done by length as opposed to weight. Each angler is given a unique identifier just prior to the tourney and you take a photo of the fish on a measuring board with your identifier in the photo. Then release the fish directly back into the water. There have been people caught cheating using multiple measuring boards. They cut a section out of the board and then glued it back together. When you catch a fish they would take two photos. One on each board. You might have an 18” bass and a 20” bass due to the modified board. A guy in Texas went so far as to cut the tail section off a bass and kept it frozen in a ziplock bag. He would catch a fish and get out the frozen tail. Just lay the tail over the fish and cover the cut part with his hand as if he’s holding the fish down. Here’s an article about the frozen fish tail guy.
