Yet some Steelers fans want to trade Highsmith so Herbig can be the starter.

not going to win many games ---without a consistent run game. Not going to win many games --by all 3 QB throwing picks.and what was up with Tomlin standing in the field of play--- while plays were being ran. That should have been penalties.

Not specific to this game but enough with the talk about great this defense is going to be, let your play do the talking:
Thornhill saying this could be the best defense ever
Tomlin saying the defense can do historic things
All the training camp praise for Ramsey and Peyton

That would kill Barry Sanders career, and probably take him out of the HOF. LoL

Yeah exactly. Most of Barry Sanders yards came on one , to two huge runs. You take just one off, and it's not close to the same.

Second secondary looks kind of meh. Is that a product of our defensive scheme and coaching or just on the talent. I ask because of the poor secondary play last year.
Peyton Wilson didn’t look good in coverage.
    Second team Oline was sloppy.
    Very impressed with Holcomb.
Roman Wilson playing really well, deserves first team reps even when Austin gets healthy.
Very hard to evaluate this team when virtually all of our stars haven’t played yet. Would like to see a couple series before the regular season with our starters.

Willie Parker was like that. His carries were like one yard, no gain, a loss of 2 and then whoosh a 74 yarder.

I know and am still amazed that people do it every single season. There are no game plans. They play vanilla defense. Nobody within the org cares if they win or lose. It’s solely for evaluating players and additional practice. Yet, people that have been watching for decades say the same crap every single year. It makes no sense at all. I can understand a kid that’s just getting into football taking it seriously. Outside of that? Nope

Preseason has become more and more unwatchable for at least 10 years....Now around half of the league doesn't play the starters in the preseason, so it's crazy for those who put some stock on it

I took sanders as an example and threw out one high and one low and his average moved from 4.98 to 4.96

Yep. Some people don't understand the law of large numbers. The larger the sample size the closer to the true mean the average is.

Yes, the secondary isn't great without the top four cornerbacks and their best safety.

Wilson had a good game as a receiver. I didn't watch him on the INT, but he looks at least competent enough out there to see the field if Austin is hurt.

Johnson looked nice. He was much more decisive in his cuts and played faster bc of it. I think that was a big part of why Najee played "slow". Harris had such poor vision that he kinda never really knew what to do with the ball. Once he got to the open field and had a clear path to just run forward and build momentum, he was good. When forced to read and react in the backfield, he slowed down, hesitated, and relied on jukes too much. If Johnson runs more like he did this game than he did in the first, he should be just fine.

Well said. Its throws like that first one that remind us why he never made it as a starter.

Eh, Thompson kinda is what he is. Does well on the first read and is athletic enough to extend the play. He definitely has a future in the league as someone's vet 2/3 but I don't really see him having the upside. Howard has been running ahead of him all camp, so it will be interesting to see how he performs

37 yards? That is Najee's career long and was achieved his rookie year. Warren had a 74 yard TD in 2023 against the Browns and a 66 yard TD in the preseason earlier that year against the Bills. I don't know if there's enough room on the roster to keep him on the 53 or not, but Nichols has earned a PS spot IMO. He's been way too good not to be. It will be interesting to see if Williams or Taylor can edge Woods off the roster as well. I lean towards Taylor at this point because he is a rookie and not a 3rd year player, but Williams

Both punters will be punting for an NFL team this season. I think the edge is Johnston because I think he's a bit better as a directional punter, but Waitman has the leg and the ability to be a top 20 punter in the league. Its cool to see we have a punter no matter who we choose after rostering scrubs like Harvin, Wing, and Berry for so long.

On paper the secondary is fantastic but nobody knows because we haven’t seen them. All we can go on right now is what we have seen from last year and the number 2’s so far this year in preseason. I still don’t have alot of faith in our defensive staff so I guess my complaint of the secondary even though they are the backups is more directed at the coaching until proven otherwise.

If our tackles are playing well we’ll be in good shape.

Mistake by MR on that interception. Still not a bad read, just under threw it. I think he’ll correct mistakes like that and will be a good backup and give us a punchers chance in case AR goes down.

Metcalf, Miller, RW, CAIII and the dual TE’s? I think we’ll have a good passing attack.

    Are we doomed?

I didn't get to watch it... and my damn Hulu DVR didn't record it. Hulu is supposed to record all of the damn Steelers games.

Have to wait until replay tomorrow on NFL Network.

Turn it off when Logan Woodside comes in at QB. His performance was more ghastly than a "Saw" movie.

yah, I hear that **** every year. Only problem with that is it’s the same during the regular season when your excuses can’t be used.

Rule of thumb. We know not everyone is skilled to make the team, but if your tweeners who are trying with all their might aren’t at least fundamentally sound, that means they are not being coached. Just look at how the cornerbacks get burned on almost every out route or fade. They don’t create enough contact to mess up the timing and they never have enough safety help(Minkah the last two seasons) to bridge the gap.

By the way, the same non starters your talking about, well, our non starters are playing their non starters in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

You finally get where I’m going with this? Mediocrity breeds excuses. And excuses breeds losing. The Steelers have been doing that a lot lately. And if regular season wins is your cup of tea, keep enjoying that because meaningful games will never be won again until Mike Tomlin is gone the **** off this team.
