I think he is going to be a great player. This season, we will have three good OLBs and maybe if they stay healthy we will actually get some pressure on the QB (we didn't really do that last year).

But I think it is also interesting to consider the idea that this pick may spell the end of Woodley after this season. With his high cap number, he could very easily go the way of Harrison did this year, and the team could very easily move on. Then we would have Worilds and Jones as our OLBs, and hopefully more cap room.

This could have easily been a cap move in preparation for next year. We SHOULD have a lot of cap room next year once all of these cap cut hits fall off the books.

    I like the move.

When did DL retire? Because no rookie is coming in and starting in his scheme. There's more then just rushing the passer which is how Jones will be used next season, as a situational pass rusher.

I bet Jones will be the exception and will start at some point this year, if not out of the gates.

Woodley is not going anywhere. If they got rid of him thats 14 mil in dead money next year.

we need people that get to the qb , before jones we had a living harmstring and half-bust as a starters , and unknown backups .

A living hamstring :roflmao: Now thats funny right there!

Hollywood Woodley best come in ready to go. Wourlds rookie contract is up after this season. If Hollywood flounders this year he might be on the outside looking in.

I think Jones will get more playing time as a rookie than usual in LeBeau's defense he played OLB in a 3/4 defense in college, he's not making a transition from DE to OLB like the Steelers usually drafts.

Exactly. As a part time player, he had 14 sacks as a rookie. I'm a little bit less high on Jones than some, but when pick #17 rolled around he was the best player left on my board. Pretty much a no brainer pick at that point for me.

I understand why the Steelers picked Jones. You need to get to the Quarterback. In the North you have two pretty good QB's you play 4 times a year, with Flacco and Dalton. You might not like them, but the guys can play and play well. So, we need the pass rush, we lacked Turnovers the last couple of seasons, and a decent pass rush creates turnovers either via strip sacks, or rushed throws that turn into INT's. I'm not sure if Jones will start or not, but Worilds is a very injury prone LB, at least as far as past history. So you might see Jones starting sooner and later, and if he comes on strong, he won't be leaving the line up. Plus don't say rookies don't start In DL's system. Didn't Timmons and Woodley start when they were Rookies??

I don't know that he started in 2007, but he played in 13 games. His 2nd year, he busted out into double digit sacks.

The Steelers say he is a FOOTBALL PLAYER and that is fine with me,
they can evaluate LB talent, it is OL,RB and CB we should worry about with the Steelers

they pay woodley about a million dollars a sack. what a deal. jones is here for sacks and turnovers. he gets them and he causes them. how much would you put out if your worilds this year? enough to get a contract elsewhere next year and not enough to get hurt this year. then we can all talk about how bad he was and how much of a traitor he is to the steelers.

my take on the pick is that he will need time to bulk up. Look at Worilds when he was drafted and now. He's gotten bigger muscle wise. JJ will need to do the same as he will have to hold the edge and I don't think he can do that right now. He is 23 or 24 by time he starts he will be 25-26 years old. I'm a little worried.
But he was the best player available left on the board so we took him. I hope he excels.
For the record I wanted Vacarro..

    I wanted Vaccaro too...oh well.

I am not too concerned with Jones' age. Hampton was about the same age when he was drafted. Ended up seeing a lot of playing time his rookie year and went on to be a great Steeler for many years.

Your right. We will lose Woodely or Worlids now, which is the opposite of what we wanted to do, we wanted depth at OLB...

But now, there will be pressure to get Jarvis in the starting lineup. And we will just be in the same position again in the next draft.

I just foresee Worlids having a big year next year and and then everyone will be pisssed because we will be leaving as a free agent after all that time bringing him along.

I would rather had drafted a OLB in 2nd or 3rd round, resign Worlids, and slowly bring the rookie along.

To be fair though, Jarvis Jones was probably BPA (with the exception of Eiffert). So I guess it was the right pick.

Was that 4.9 40 he ran on his pro day a fluke or is it his legit average? He better have more zip in his step than that, if he plans on getting to QBs in the pros??

I actually think this helps Worilds and if I am the coaching staff this is how I approach it.

Jason, Lamar is only signed through next year. Play well this year and maybe we will look to extend you and let Woodley go. Outplay the guy on the other side of the line and you will have earned it and proved our trust in you.

I asked that myself. He didn't run at the combine and I'm not sure why, if he was hurt or not. If he was hurt, was he 100% at his pro day? I look at him on tape and he doesn't look that slow. I don't know.

Either way, I would be more interested in his 10 yard split time.
