I see they swept Detroit. Not paying much attention but will tune back in when (I hope) Malcolm Nunez and Cam Devanney are on the left side of the infield.
They don’t have to be the 27 Yankees, if they could just consistently score 3 runs a game they could be respectable.

Buster Olney's intro in an article on the trade deadline I read on this morning:

"It would be ideal if every MLB team were so desperate to win that they would do whatever it takes. But in an industry with so many variables from team to team -- roster composition, payroll commitment, market size, owner ambition, fan rabidity and history -- some organizations are willing to go further and do more than others.

The New York Mets paid more in luxury taxes last season ($97 million) than the Pittsburgh Pirates have dedicated to payroll this season, and Pittsburgh could attempt to reduce salary commitments even further at this year's trade deadline." :lolol:

Here's a scenario that I always wonder about.
Most GM's wait until the last week before the trading deadline to get real aggressive. It's not often that you see a trade well in advance of that time. But consider the case of Andrew Heaney - what would the return have been 3-4 weeks ago? I realize that GM's probably hold off to enhance a players value in a trade, but here's an example where the return has tanked to at best, nothing more than a fringe prospect. And in that time frame, the Bucs position in the standings hasn't changed. If they had engaged in serious discussion then, the return would have likely been more substantial. Think High A prospect vs. a rookie ball participant.

Now, possibly every GM in the league looking for pitching help knew that Heaney would probably fall off a cliff and waited it out, but the Bucs whould have been better served aggressively trying to move him. Of course, the flip side is we all wanted them to release Pham every day for the first 3 months of the season and they didn't. Now, he may return a higher prospect than Heaney ever would have.

Hoping that Keller returns a ML ready bat when he gets moved. Just don't trust Cherrington. If he makes a deal with Boston or Toronto, I'll freak out. Neither team has MLB ready talent that could help the Bucs next year that isn't already in the bigs. I really like the kid from the Cubs, Owen Caissie.

I think in part it's your thought about some wanting to get the best deal, with others it's part of deciding whether to be buyers or sellers, and if the latter there's the underlying desire to keep as many cheeks in the seats for as long as possible.

Tommy Pham saved us from being no-hit last night. That was the last free game from Xfinity so that is it for me watching them.

He strikes out 30% of the time but that is the world we live in now, where utility infielders strike out at a higher rate than Reggie Jackson or Willie Stargell. I would definitely trade Keller for Owen Caissie. He is a tailor made trade target for the Pirates, some sting in his bat, MLB ready, and blocked by decent players on his team.

Well guys, If .200 is the Mendoza line. What is .100. Suwinski is now batting .096.
I have the name for it, THE END OF THE LINE!!!.

Stolen from another message board. How the F you in MLB batting .096?

Bright side, they got Skenes some runs. Now if they hold on he'll get a win.

Raise it. Should have easily swept the series with those Futbol scores until today. Most bad hitting pitchers (back when they still were allowed to hit) had averages higher than Suwinski's. That's just horrible. Maybe they could pay someone to take him, please. Cruz is having some bright moments mixed in with his also low B.A. Scoring from 1st on a single today was awesome. Will he make the 30-30 club this year? 13 more HRs needed. Wonder if anyone gets dumped this week?

Skenes has allowed one run or fewer in 14 of 22 starts this season after doing it 14 times as a rookie.
Shame he has to play in Pittsburgh.
Like I said before, any other team he wins 20 games
Gone are the days of the city of champions.
    Pens suck
Steelers look like the most desperate team, going as far as looking for talent in nursing homes

All MLB games free on Tuesday, including Bucs at Frisco. But you geezers on the east coast will need a grandpa nap and permission from the Home to stay up that late with a 9:45pm start time. I can remember when night games started at 8pm with west coast games (LA & SF) starting at 11pm. Thank goodness for tiny transistor radios that were easily concealed under the sheets. ;)

Just read an article about Cubs prospect Owen Caisse, he can't hit fastballs over 97 or lefties. A platoon player for Keller is not what the Pirates need.

Trade deadline is less than 72 hours away. I bet Pham, Heaney, Icky Falafel, and anyone on a one year contract is packing their bags right now.
I keep checking my phone, but so far…..Nutting.

I agree. My friend gives me his password so I can watch any game I want. If Bucs were good I'd watch most the games. I'm a Comcast Xfinity customer and they have the MLB package. It's not that I can't afford the 160-170 bucks to get it every season, it's that I don't want to watch crappy baseball.

I always tell my wife if the Pirates ever get good I'll be all in. Not much else in life would take priority. I want to see one more more World Series!!!! 144 years and we have grand total of 5:(

Radio chatter this morning was a conversation about MLB instituting a salary cap. I don't know about a hard cap like the NFL, or maybe a stepped cap like NBA, or a bit of both?
I do think there needs to be a salary floor where owners have to spend a certain amount on players salaries or face 'fines'.

    What do you guys think?

Being a Pirate fan I obviously want one. No doubt in my mind that the Nutbags would still spend way below whatever the cap would be. Any fines would be less then paying a decent player. I wonder what they'd set it at??? 150 million?? I think Dodgers and Mets are over 300 million. My mighty Pirates are like 80-90 million which I expect to go lower when Ahole Nutbag salary dumps.

The fines would have to go up with each infraction. Otherwise owners would just budget for it.
I don't really care what salary players make. If you have an owner that's willing to spend on talent, you have a team that will compete usually. Not always but typically you will. Fans want parity. If the league is to survive, they need a real plan that promotes parity. On the other side of that coin, too much power to the players gives you NBA results where it honestly seems like the league is rigged toward certain players/teams.

This could be a very important moment in history for MLB.

When the lights, go down, in the "Sahitty". Great ball park on the bay. Glad the Bucs hung on and mustered up some decent offense after a long plane ride and short turnaround. Keller just lost a lot of trade interest possibly with a horrible appearance and only 2 innings at just under 80 pitches. Intentional?

My photo of clouds that looked like a swan had run its course. This is my retro rebel self from before many on this MB were probably born and Jeh and I were both eyeing the latest i-abacus release.
