I mean just the thought of playing for the Bungles.

Still not sure why it matters what Porter said.

The only metric I'm applying here, thorn, is reality. That seems to work pretty well for the Steelers FO which rarely misses on personnel decisions of this nature. Too bad James and his agent decided to delude themselves into believing something other than reality.

I was just making a point I know it doesn't matter what Porter said. James was out of options that's why he went to the Bungles with those ugly striped uniforms.

Exactly. I hated to see him go, it was almost a sickening feeling. But the bottom line is the Steelers were good to him, very good to him. $4.3 mil is nothing to sneeze at either. yes I realize the original amount was more but it was still a very good offer. Greed got him, bad advice got him, pride got him...who knows.

Someone mentioned other past greats leaving, dont think any of them went to our most hated rivals though.

Him and his silly striped uniform now make him an enemy. Only thing I m concerned about now is who the next great LB will be.

Me neither. I mean come on. There are 32 teams in the NFL and he gets and offer from Cinci..Come on James. Dont do us like that.

He should have just retired a steeler.. Damn

I predict he wont have a good year with Cinci. He cant stay healthy and is indeed in decline. If he was worth the money the FO would have kept him and paid him.

Retire a Steeler? So you're advocating him walking away from millions of dollars so you (and a lot of other people too) can hold him in high regard as an honored member of the Steelers? LOL, thats funny. If the shoe were on the other foot, I guarantee you that you'd do exactly what Harrison did.

Why is it impossible for people to understand that James (or any player for that matter) can't control who is interested in him and who isn't? Seriously, why the disconnect with reality?

    :frustrated:

People like to think that players take fandom as seriously as we do. I've had jobs where I really appreciated being given a chance to come in a grow, but when the time came to move on I did it. I gave that company a lot of great work too, so I didn't feel like I owed them anything. This isn't any different.

I seem to remember a quote by James several years ago, asking if he hated the Ravens for cutting him, or something to that effect, to which he replied "The steelers cut me too." I'm sure Pittsburgh will always have a huge place in his heart, as he will to most Steelers fans... but let's not kid ourselves into thinking every Steeler feels like they need to always be a Steeler.

I believe it was ESPN but one of the major sports networks did a film study on James Harrison last year. When he was in his prime he was coming off the edge at under a 45 degree angle and last year he was at 60 degrees. He's done and it wouldn't surprise me if he gets busted using PEDs next year to try and get back to where he was and say I told you so. Just my thoughts and I think most of these guys are on one thing or another so he could already be using them and that's why his dbody is falling apart.

This is a bit off the track of the thread thus far, but in my man cave I have a James Harrison autographed Pro Bowl jersey and a couple of prints of his historic touchdown in the Super Bowl... I'd like to know what everyone thinks I should do with these items. I have an idea of what I'll do, but I was curious what others might think.

I know it sucks that James went to the Bengals, but c'mon people, let's get real. He LOVES football and he still wants to play it. Obviously in hindsight, he should have accepted the Steelers pay cut, but going beyond that, if the Bengals were the only team that offer him money to play football, of course he should take the deal.

I have no will ill towards the ex-#$92 and will always remember the great he plays he made for us. One of my favorite Steelers to watch over the past 10 years.

Agreed. JH playing for the Benglas doesn't change a thing, doesn't change all the good he did for the Steelers while he was here, doesn't change the fact that he is responsible for quite possibly the most exciting play in SB history. I think this hating players because they play for a team you don't like is completely over the top. Besides, he went to play for the Bungles, not like he landed with the Ravens.

I would sell the jersey and replace it with a current Steeler (or a past Steeler great such as Bettis, Mean Joe, Ward, etc.) but I would keep the prints of the greatest TD in NFL history.

This discussion is humorous, James Harrison is now a turd, not a revered former Steeler like the selfless Hines Ward.

The difference between Harrison and Ward?

Somebody offered Harrison a chance to play after he was released. That's all plain and simple.

He was contacted by several. I hold no ill will towards JH but there's no disputing that Hines did it in a way that Steeler fans can't help but find endearing, myself included.

Because he never held any discussion with them, obviously teams were interested in him playing for them if they contacted him. If Hines wanted to still play he could have.

I am hoping for a deal on a Steelers JH jersey and would still be proud to wear it. He is (was) our best defender. The ESPN film study showing angle of attack might mean back pain that day and nothing more. I bet James has a big year in Cincinatti.

Losing a Super Bowl warrants a pay cut? If you lost a Super Bowl doesn't that mean you are in the Super Bowl? It's kind of hard to make it to one so I would think that would be an accomplishment and not a pay cut line item. Also the other two things wouldn't qualify either. You think Favre, Manning, Rivers, Romo, Manning, Brady or any recent QB that has lost in the playoffs took a pay cut? Did Brady take a pay cut when they lost to the Ravens a few years ago in the WC round and Flacco completed like 4 passes? Also did Romo take a pay cut for 17 8-8 seasons? He just got paid.

Hines couldn't play anymore, for the last third of '11 season he was getting charity tosses to get to 1000, culminating in the pathetic -3yd shovel pass to get his number, 31 other GMs saw this too. Did Harrison get any charity sacks last yr?

If Ward was offered $2MM/yr by somebody last yr, he'd have taken it. He just didn't get one.

Tell me if Harrison had absolutely no takers, and had a teary eyed retirement press conf expressing his undying loyalty to the B&G, would he somehow be a better player in your eyes?

Neither player owes the Steelers or their fans anything, they are/were great players. If they could make some $ after the Steelers had no use for them, good for them.

So teams contacted him just to say hi? He wanted to retire a Steeler, why is that such a hard concept to believe? Other players have retired with their original team rather then play for another team. You're telling me that a LB at 35 with a bad back and knees can find work at a much more demanding position then a healthy WR at the same age? Hines absolutely would have gotten a contract had he shopped himself.

I think most of us are more upset that he turned down a NICE offer, $4.3-$4.6 mil. They didnt simply cut him, they wanted him to stay, but he was greedy. Now if they had offered him $1.5 or $2 mil, or no offer at all, then yea I couldnt blame him and would wished him the best. BUT that wasnt the case.

Hines offered to play for the league minimum and the FO refused. I m glad he retired but I wouldve wished him well if he hadnt.
