This is pretty much the way I saw it. I have nothing against Minkah, nor am I going to get on board with him being the reason behind the communication issues last year. But he just wasn't a good ROI the past two years. Do I think that was his doing? Not entirely. I think some of the schemes they ran muddled his effectiveness. Ramsey - whether by cap cost or cash - is in the same elite salary tier as Fitz at a slightly older age, but in a position to contribute more value as a versatile corner who can also line up at safety on a team that ran a good amount of three-safety nickel last year.

Similarly, Smith gives more firepower to an offense than runs a lot of 13 personnel and has a question mark at WR2. Last year he ranked 4th amongst TEs in receptions (88, behind only the big three of Bowers, McBride, and Kelce), receiving yards (884), and YAC (510), and tied for 2nd in TDs (8). This while his 19.5% target share was only 8th (Bowers, McBride, and Kelce were all 24%+), his 413 routes run were 12th (Bowers, McBride, and Kelce all north of 495), and his 4.8 yard ADOT ranked 64th. If you're looking for a big target to do damage in short and intermediate routes this might be your guy.

We can quibble over the impact of losing Fitzpatrick, or over the schemes the team chooses to run, but I have a hard time seeing where this move doesn't make them better with what they want to do.

I don't know about the rest of what You said, but I can tell You that if You can effectively pass from a 3 TE set, it is extremely difficult to defend, and to know what defenders you actually want to use against it.
Now will they do this, and do it effectively.....

There is a method to this madness according to Rodgers' ex-teammate. Gotta say, I like what I am hearing.

I must have missed the whole Minka had hired Drew Rosenhaus and wanted a new contract.

    Dolphins Rework Fitzpatrick Contract
The safety who was just re-acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers, gets a contract adjustment after hiring Drew Rosenhaus as his new agent
Miami Dolphins Give DB Minkah Fitzpatrick a Bonus

Trade looks a little better if Minka and his agent Drew Rosenhaus was about to demand a TJ Watt type deal.

A few things; Steelers had a top 3 defense in deep passes allowed last season so Fitz was doing something back there. Ramsey's versatility (especially as injury insurance in the CB room) was the key in Tomlin wanting this trade done. His in-the-box play will be key this season. But I think the defense will be susceptible to the speedier WRs with Slay and Ramsey losing steps. Bigger concern might be whether Thornhill can get back to being the player he was in KC because he didn't look good as a Brown.
