Until we see the specifics of the Ramsey and Smith contracts it's hard to get too granular, but in general they're fine. If anything, the pressure point is the cash, not the cap. Extendees like Watt rarely account for more against the cap in the upcoming season than they originally did due to the nature of teams to end-load the contract's base salary. Oftentimes a chunk of that money (Watt's is $21M this year, e.g.) is converted to signing bonus and spread over the years of the extension.

What that does though, is ease the cap burden by transitioning money earned via weekly paycheck - provided they remain on the roster and healthy - into cash the owner must present up front. Signing bonuses are, naturally, paid in full when the deal is inked - as are option bonuses once they're triggered. So if a player is offered a $40M signing bonus over five years, it represents $8M/year for cap accounting, but the player receives the $40M when the deal is signed.

That brings us to Ramsey. Many reports have talked about the $26M the Steelers will owe him this year, despite his contract indicating he'd only account for about $6M. The best I can figure is that the reports are talking about the cash he will be owed, since he has an option bonus of $19M set to trigger in late August. That, on top of his base, per game, and workout bonuses doesn't get us to $26M, but it's in the ballpark.

For now, it means that if they don't re-work his contract he'll be owed $19M by end of summer, Watt when extended will be owed in the neighborhood of $45M, and Jonnu Smith $3-5M. Between their existing cap space ($18M) and accounting gymnastics they can take these contracts on, but despite being extremely wealthy some owners can absorb those cash-up-front deals better than others.

The Steelers are currently sitting on about $7M in dead money. That will increase by $8.6M once the trade is finalized, but for cost purposes that's six-of-one, a half-dozen of the other because it stems from the last two bonus prorations they would have paid Fitzpatrick anyway. So they're taking $8.6M from one column and putting it in another.

    they are FINE.

    Heyward $$ disappears soon

they are paying NO ONE on offense, for the most part. (well......DK - OK, one guy!)

this trade put TJ on HIGH ALERT, that is for sure!

it's a young team on many first contracts.

    QB is CHEAP

NOT Paying Najee was SMART and getting rid of head case Pickens was the right move

A team can always find a way to sign a player. Contracts can be written different ways and back loaded.

But, i think the Steelers are discussing offers they had for watt.
also, we will be fine without watt. Herbig will be great for us. And I'm curious what Sawyer could do.

Would y'all be ok with watt to commanders
    - rounds 1 and 5
    - mclaurin

And then we sign Simmons. And let Herbig play the edge.

Well, that explains the dumb mistake behind why my numbers didn't quite come together - I wasn't adding the $1.5M the Steelers said they were throwing in to Ramsey's deal. Otherwise, yeah, they're using the cash amount totals for Ramsey this year rather than cap hit. It was the only way to explain that large of a discrepancy from that for which he will account.

Extending TJ actually creates more cap space, so i think they're fine.

Yes! A couple of years ago I would’ve called you crazy! Injury bug, disappears at playoff time. Yes a 1 and a 5 and Mclauren all day long.
