Who here is hoping we find our franchise RB in this draft?

I have not done too much research on this years RB class, but I am really hoping that the Steelers find their guy who can carry the load and be the franchise back. I honestly would rate this as my top priority, although it doesn't have to be a first rounder if the right guy isn't there.

But honestly, I want a guy that opponents will HAVE to prepare for. I remember defenses having to practice specific techniques to stop the Bus, and even Willie Parker. That hasn't been the case recently with our fatty options. I do NOT want to see the Steelers try to force Dwyer or Redman to be the guy, because neither of them have the complete skillset to do that.

If we want to be a running team, then we need to find the runner!

We need running back help in this offseason, but I think it's a long way from being our top priority. The way the rules in the NFL are written have created a pass-first league. The new "crown of the helmet" rule for ballcarriers takes us one more step further in that direction. Every aspect of the game is important, and I'm not saying that running and stopping the run are not important. However, to be a championship team in today's NFL, the most important things that you need to do are throw the football and stop your opponent from throwing the football. While I'd like to improve the running back position, I don't want to become a "running team." I want to be a balanced team that can throw and run, with effective throwing being the #1 priority because that's what the rules favor - and because we already have a franchise QB, which is the #1 ingredient for a balanced offense. Build around Ben.

I believe it is very important to have standout rb, look at what the Redskins did with
a 6th round rb. A good rb along with a good run blocking OL would take considerable
pressure off of Ben R and he wouldn't have to think that he will have to win games by himself
like last year when he failed miserbly in the clutch. Also as pointed out by #43, the steelers need to keep
their defense off the field(time of possesion) as old 43 says, this defensive was not designed to stay on field
for long period of times. A good to great rb would HELP the passing game. Here is hoping the Steelers find one in the draft.

if you remember we didnt get the bus in the draft.. we got him via another team... he was already in the league... and i believe FWP was an DFA.... so i dont think technically we really got FWP from the drapt.... but the difference is at those times we had money ... money to spend on FAs ... now if we could get walter payton for 800,000 a year we couldnt sing him... its just rediculious how we are always so cash strapped.. here you got the $hitty bengals with a better recored than us last year and they had something crazy liek 54 million in cap space and we were over the cap... just makes no sense.. we have no money and a F-ing 8-8 record.. we act like praft picks are so precious.. we talk of trading DOWN to get more fo them.. trade down with the vikings .. then do it again with the falcons.. and those are great moves..but how about having some cap room where we can sing a free agent.. arnt free agent signing liek having an extra 1st 2nd 3rd round DP depends on the calibur of player we sign?

Yes, a good running game helps a passing game. However, a good passing game can make a running game effective. Look at New England. They had one of the best running games in the league last year, and it was almost entirely because of their passing game - even though their passing game lacked threats outside of the hash marks. The threat of a really good passing game is the #1 thing that a team can do to have an effective conventional running game. I say "conventional" because some of these spread offenses with running QBs put up good numbers in the run game, but they tend to get the QB killed. Washington led the league in rushing last season, but they will not be able to run that scheme in 2013. They will need to be more conventional, and that means that RG3 will need to be effective dropping back and passing the football in a more conventional manner. The jury is out on how they will be able to do that (I think Griffin has the smarts to handle it, but it may take some growing pains). I think the spread-style run game will be a short lived phenomenon in the NFL, and will go the way of the run and shoot.

We have a conventional QB who, in the past has shown the ability to win big games even if the running game is sputtering. I'm not saying that the running game should be neglected - I'm definitely not saying that at all. I'm saying the step #1 to enhancing our offense is to get Ben the weapons and pass blocking to have a dangerous passing attack. If we do that, we will be successful with good RBs and not need a great RB.

We will certainly select a RB in this draft. Where will just be the question. I think a lot of it will depend on what the Steelers think of Ahmad Bradshaw. If they feel good that they can get him signed, then I would only expect, at best, a late round pick. If they are unsure of him, then we could realistically see an earlier pick. Looking at the RB draft class, these are the possible landing spots I would see for the following RBs. These guys may not last until these rounds, but if they did, then I would have to start considering them:

    Round 1: Nobody
    Round 2: Eddie Lacy
Round 3: Montee Ball, Jonathan Franklin, Le'veon Bell, Giovanni Bernard
Round 4: Stepfan Taylor, Marcus Lattimore, Christine Michael, Joseph Randle
Round 5: Kenjon Barner, Knile Davis, Kerwynn Williams
Round 6: Ray Graham, Rex Burkhead

Eddie lacy, stephon taylor, and jonathan franklin are the only guys in this draft who i think can be franchise backs. There are a bunch of guys who can be good and serviceable but not what i would consider someone having to gameplan for

I'd put Taylor and Franklin down as serviceable backs and Ball and Bell as game changers.

I think a running back will be selected in the third or fourth round, maybe the second. Defense will get the first pick and offense will get rounds 2 and 3 unless there is a high rated defensive player in the second. I am hoping for two out of the three positions: WR, receiving TE, and RB in rounds 2 and 3.

This offense needs at least one weapon that plays out of the draft; the defense needs a safety or a linebacker. I do like the "best player available" philosophy though. While I believe that the first round will be the best defensive player available, round 2 could be a wild card and bump my next two picks.

i feel about the same way. i have been reading franklin and bell won't make it out of round 2. we also like some later guys like barner and gilislee. i agree though D,O,O, and i'm going back to D for the 4th most likely. with our highest TD scorers gone, this defense has to stay strong to keep us close this year and let our best O player ben see if he can win them for us.

The only thing about ball that scares me is wisconsin runs their rbs to death. I dont worry about the fact that he can carry the ball 30 times a fame because he has alot. He might not have alot of tread left in three or four years. Ron dayne for example

I agree that this league is becoming a pass first league, even though I hate that. We need a closer, I remember watching games when the Bus was playing int he 4th with a lead. I knew that we were gonna win and the Bus would chew up the clock. Now it's anybodys guess, it seems with a lead in the 4th we go three and out alot. I believe thats because our libe hasn't been the best and we had a huge void (No pun intended) after the Bus retired. We need someone that craves hitting the defense in the 4th and takes the win; not someone to hold onto the the lead.

I beleive our line is greatly improved and now we need our closer. Hopefully that person will be in the draft this year and we get him!

If we can get Eddie Lacy in the second round then we will have a franchise RB.

Lacy will not last until the second round, especially where we pick! The Packers are said to be interested in Lacy so if we don't grab him in the first (provided he is still available), I bet he is gone before we pick again!

Our lack of cap space is the price you pay for having a franchise QB as well as franchise players like Troy, Harrison, and Woodley on defense. I'm in no hurry to go back to the years of Brister, Kordell, or David Woodley. As far as running back, I think the team needs to have the Oline stay healthy and then adapt well to the new zone blocking scheme. I don't think the Steelers will pull the trigger on Lacy in rd. 1 unless they trade down and everyone else they want is already gone. They would still have to remain ahead of GB in order to get him. I'm not so much worried about cap space in the future as I am about replenishing talent. GO STEELERS

Solid list. I'd like to add Miguel Maysonet, Zac Stacy, Cierre Wood, and Mike Gillislee as mid-late round prospects who could excel in a dart/stretch centric ZBS.

Playing devil's advocate here- why spend a higher pick on a running back after the coaching staff demonstrated their propensity towards under-utilizing a "feature" back last season?

I would love to see us get a franchise guy but I think we are kidding ourselves if we think we're gonna ever get another bus. I just think the game has moved past players like that. The only person that I can think of who resembles the bus right now is Marshawn Lynch. I hope I'm wrong but it just seems like the league is moving more toward the crazy speed guy as opposed to the guy that's gonna just pound it up the middle and run out the clock. Are there any guys in the draft that resemble the bus? I don't keep up with college and that's why I ask.

The coaching staff didn't have a stud RB to count on that they could feature Redman had nagging injuries, and Dwyer taps out after 2 or 3 carries.

I want Bradshaw for a one year deal and then draft Lattimore with the premise he sits this year and spends the entire season re-habbing. I think that guy is the real deal, even with his knee injuries. But either way we need to find more than just a solid role player. We need someone who is going to take and keep the position.

Lacys stock has dropped, questions about his hamstring conditioning, and being out of condition for his proday workout has hurt his draft status, Franklin according to some scouts has replaced Lacy as the top back in this draft: I expect some team will draft a back in the 1st round, rams and giants both need a back to replace the ones they lost to FA, depends on who they think is worth a 1 pick, heres CBS sports take on running backs in this years draft, I think the steelers can afford to draft a back in the second or third round and feel good about their pick...
