This is why they struggle big time in the playoffs on defense every year

Some context would be nice here.

I know we don't disguise blitzes very well. More of a 'stop it if you can' style. Which is frustrating because everyone just goes to the hot route which we haven't been able to cover consistently.

Last season I think things were more of a personnel issue. Somebody was running their own plays out there.

It's not good when Chris Hogan is talking shyte about your crappy coaching staff. He's not wrong either.

Did you bother to read it or are you just shîtting on it because it makes your boy Tomlin look bad? None of it is false.

The last “fresh” DC the Steelers had was Dick LeBeau in 2004. Since then the team’s been promoting from within and keeping the same scheme.

Ah yes, who can forget the lacrosse player burning our vaunted defense.

Unfortunately this is a recurring theme, players commenting how simple our defense was. At least they have cleaned some of that up lately.

My biggest problem, the opposing team know what to expect from our defense especially late in the year and every year this is ugly against very good offense....The only hope,is the opposing offense make non forcing mistake like turnovers, drop pass and that Watt has a monster game....If Watt is double and can't dominate or the opposing QB can make quick decision and know what to expect, this is over

This is not the first time a opposing player know what to expect from our defense

Look no further than the Eagles defense. They draft much better on the D side of the ball than the Steelers and it won them a Super Bowl. Jalen Carter, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean were EPIC draft picks. These players had an impact from game 1 of their rookie seasons. When was the last time Steelers drafted this well on D? It was the 00's decade..... the '01 and '07 were particularly good drafts for defense.

They developp better too....They were a bottom 5 defense in 2023 and they change their DC and they were by far the best defense in the league after september...This is true that their rookies had a huge impact!

When was the last time the steelers had rookie players with a major impact on D?

Bell maybe?...Polamalu and Shazier were up and down as rookie,Watt was very good but still not great yet in 2017

Our defense let opposing offenses complete too many 3rd down. The problem with ‘bend but don’t break’ defense is that defense is on the field for too much time and by fourth quarter, they are tired and they break. As the season wears on, the breaking point comes earlier and earlier in the games. Never liked this ‘bend but don’t break’ philosophy because it actually is bend and then break defense.

One of the biggest error that the steelers make in the last few years was to not have put Brian Flores as DC after 2022.Austin is below average

Well you have two options. You can whine like you do about crap from almost a decade ago. Which some would rightly call crying over spilt milk. Or you could actually acknowledge the fact we have a new front office and new scouting department and give them the benefit of the doubt while they rebuild.

I get tagged in these threads alot because it goes to the heart of Tomlin's "we gonna do what we do" philosophy. This height of arrogance that if the team executes at a high level that they can't be beat. Which is great if that high level is above the opposing team's but it rarely is. My favorite example is a game vs the Chargers where they had lost both starting tackles and were using guys they plucked off the street. Those two were made to look like all pro tackles because Tomlin wouldn't change what they do and didn't plan to stress them by putting more pressure on them. Then there is the Cooper Rush games where he looked like the 2nd coming of Troy Aikmen. The new one is not moving TJ around to account for dbl and triple teams that were completely taking him out of the game. I wont get started on Bishop being picked on repeatedly after everyone sang his praises after his 2 INT game.

The outlier that proves just how real a problem this is was the Patriots game where they actually did change it up and brought in a former Giants coach to consult and they frustrated Belichick for the first half and eventually won the game only to never use those concepts again.

Until Tomlin starts game planning for specific opponents or moves on, I dont see them changing except more sub package football with 4 DL and less traditional 3-4 plays.

That is one of the component of the Eagles' success, moving on from coaches and players to get better, which is the opposite of how the Steelers operate. Getting a Vic Fangio to be the DC paid off completely.

The Eagles moved on a head coach and quarterback that won the Superbowl against the Tom Brady led Patriots because they weren't good enough for the long term.

If the Steelers had that philosophy, Tomlin and his staff should have been tossed after losing to Tim Freaking Tebow and the Denver Broncos. His message is stale, schemes are bland, and defenses are buttercream in the playoffs.

Casey Hampton was a badass rookie after Joel Steed retired.

The problem with Tomlin is that he is a mental midget and thinks he is smarter than he actually is. He has surrounded himself with yes men on defense and there is just lack of creativity and adaptability. The biggest problem on this team isn’t lack of a qb, but the head coach.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t steed retire like 3 seasons before Hampton was drafted? Iirc Kimo von oelhoffen(sp?) was our NT after steed and for at least part of hamton’s rookie season

Mike Tomlin will never hire any coach that he feels maybe smarter than himself. The guy is truly afraid of losing his job someday so he just hires mediocre coaches who are yes men only.

Ah D. LeBeau wasn't fresh. We just brought him back after His stint as a HC failed, and this is no slight to LeBeau, because I still love the guy, but so many people complained about Him when he was here....not myself, but many did.

Kimo was brought in from the Bengals to be our DE.
