You can always structure the contract as you want....Just look at the eagles right now

not if he retires after one year. big difference in what they are doing. also puts you back in the heavy dead money pool and how you deal with the aging vets down the road. minkah, TJ, and having to sign porter, and free agents. you can put your team in a bad situation kicking it down the road. the eagles will pay at some point. that also leaves you trying to draft a franchise QB and not being able to put anything around him.

I agree, now this is not the time and the plan of the steelers make no sense right now but this is a another story

But for the eagles, yes this is possible the eagles will pay at some point but it will be like in 2029 or 2030 when their SB windows will likely be over and they could have only 1 bad year like the Rams who did the same thing(even more extreme because of all their draft pick they trade)

Great front office found a way...Just look at this thread that I had made in the NFL section few week ago

teams have been doing this stuff for a long time. back in the 49ers hay day with montana they would buy players families homes and cars and other things to not have to show it against the cap.

What ever happened to the Michael Jorden’s of the world. You know, the kind of aging athlete that takes a bit less for the betterment of his team ? No bigger fan of TJ than me but come on already, if the rumors are indeed true and the Steelers have put a “fair” offer on the table, sign already or please go.

Sorry, I’m an old school traditionalists. I can’t tolerate greed in any sport. Sadly that’s the way of the modern NFL. Garrett unfortunately set the bar high so Watt wants it all. I mean he’s not old but he’s not getting any younger by NFL standards. Not to mention the injuries. I genuinely hope he stays. However, I care too much about the future of this team to pay him Garrett-like money.

Nah. He's accounting for $14M. They're still $19M over with moves they can move to free up more.

Didn't this happen the last contract? Then Watt ended up telling his agent he was signing and with being greedy? I don't know if he has the same mindset this contract. Probably talking about his last full contract.

I can see why TJ would want to be the highest paid. He is routinely disrespected when voting for DPOY and you know it stings him because he says things like “I’m used to it”. I think all the Steelers have to do is top Garretts guaranteed money and he’d sign but thats the area that the Steelers usually fall short.

At least they stepped up into the age of guarantees past the first year of a contract last time. If they hope to challenge the $128M in guarantees Garrett received, this time around they're going to have to break into the world of option bonuses. Fully guaranteeing the salary and signing bonus for a 31 year-old EDGE rusher on a four-year extension would be cray-cray.

This Watt negotiation will be a lot harder than his last one he will likely be looking to top Myles Garrett deal.

Watt a no show for minicamp instead of the playoffs. Getting an early jump on things.

This will be the year the offense rocks it all together but the defense can't stop a bowling ball.

I was surprised to see Watt skipping the MANDATORY mini-camp. I thought he would be there, but just wouldn't do a damn thing. I would assume that it is going to cost TJ to skip this?

As I posted before, this is starting to remind me of the Von Miller situation in Denver. None of the Denver fans could even imagine a life without 1st round pick, 10 year Denver Bronco, and 8-time Pro Bowler Von Miller on the roster.

I have no concern with Watt being there when the games start

I also have no concern with how much the Steelers pay him because it is not my concern

    Much ado about nothing

LOL. That thought popped into my head as well, but I can't see either team doing it.

his incentives can kick in too. we also keep adding to the dead money which is going to be about 7 right now and if cuts come will add in. then they have to carry money into the season and sign the PS. not a great deal left.

Watt is on very good terms with this franchise. The deal will get done.
As pointed out, TJ gets a lot of disrespect and even opposing teams readily admit he's one of the top to defend against.
I kind of put some of the blame on Austin, he doesn't tap into TJ skills too much... He sort of treats him like Washington did Ryan Kerrigan.
I am all for keeping him fresh but yet in the groove of the game. Especially late in the season if it looks like there is any chance of a playoff.
I would love to see what Robert Saleh could do with this same defense.

It was frustrating to see a few DC's available and were obvious upgrades, find new homes with out so much of a call.
So we keep a guy that got ran off from a city after setting a record for points allowed over a short span...
    Makes perfect sense.
