Steelers mandatory minicamp

We get the first look at Aaron Rodgers with the Steelers. Expect a lot of the national media to cover minicamp.

This is not a surprise for me(Watt).The steelers need to hurry up to make this deal before the training camp too....

I don't really care for how either side is handling this.

With the FO, unless Watt is asking for something truly ridiculous, the team has the space to pay him. Would there be risk? Sure, but that's anybody on a third contract. Garret got $88M in guarantees with his extension - Watt received $80M...in 2021. They aren't breaking new ground here. Jumping to a $40M+ APY contract from his current $28M isn't a leap either - since 2021 the cap has increased 48%; taking Watt to, say, $42M represents a 33% increase in 2025. And that number projects to go down steadily over the next few seasons with the current trend in growth.

With respect to Watt, it's a mandatory mini-camp - three days, no contact. Would there be risk? Sure, but as a team captain, leader, and its highest paid player, you should to be there. Lead by example, help build team chemistry, etc. If you want to make a statement about training camp should a deal not be in place, fine.

I get that there's some nuance over the business side of things. But in general holdouts lead to an increased risk of injury over the first few weeks of the season, which impacts the fans. And they're the ones ultimately providing both sides with the money to haggle over.

 

Since the Steelers believe in the sibling thing, let's see how JJ did on his last contract at age 31:

• Age 31: played 16 games, a blazing 5 sacks and 52 tackles
• Age 32: followed that up with a 7 game season, 1 sack and 16 tackles
• Age 33: for the finale season, 16 games, 12.5 sacks, 39 tackles

Steelers DBs coach Gerald Alexander says the team is focused on fixing Joey Porter Jr.‘s penalties; and says it’s a technique and trust issue. Alexander wants Porter to focus on the little things, especially playing the catch point and getting his head back to his ball.
