The Browns were the only team at giving Pickett a chance to compete for the starting job and we all know the Browns are terrible at judging the QB position since 1999.....Just in this decade they choose Watson(and giving 3 first round picks and a fully guarenteed contract) over Mayfield....

Not because that Kenny is maybe better that Josh Dobbs mean that Kenny is a NFL caliber QB.....It was a crazy reach by the steelers to draft him in the first round in 2022 when he would been available in the 3rd round and I don't care about the mock draft, they had Sanders in the first round too

Too many early misses are what has brought the team to the mediocre state it is in right now. Tomlin overestimates his abilities to 'coach up' developmental guys. Kahn's drafts have seemed to steer away from those kinds of picks, Jones aside (at least as early picks). The Sawyer pick tells you everything you need to know about the change in philosophy. A pick that wasn't necessarily needed but couldn't pass up due to the talent that was there.

I don't think this is the worst Steelers draft class I've seen. But it is not a great one.

Steelers gave him a chance they even let him play in 25 games

They gave him a chance to compete with Wilson

He could have played a lot last year

He could have been competing to start this year

But he ran from the competition like a cowardly little chicken

The ******* is getting the karma he deserves from running from his first team in the Peach Bowl then he ran from the Steelers

He still has a better shot at starting games this season than your guy Dobbs, who has consistently proven he is exactly what I say he is, a journeyman backup who hangs around because he is smart and likeable. That isn’t me moving goalposts. That is me being right.

Neither one of them will ever be a franchise guy but teams will still turn the reigns over to Dobbs before they ever will to Pickett.

You were wrong about Dobbs ever starting for teams, whether you admit it or not :taunt:

    just throwing this out there

    • Total Draft Picks (2009–2023): Approximately 120 players

    • Signed a Second Contract with the Steelers: Around 40 players

    • Signed a Third Contract with the Steelers: Approximately 10 players

    • Did Not Receive a Second Contract with the Steelers: Approximately 70 players

A way to drill down deeper on this would be to filter it by contract value (AAV) or player approximate value - in other words, did they develop and sign the right guys.

I had a report that focused on AAV over a five year period, and the Steelers were in the bottom 40th percentile, IIRC. If I get time this weekend I'll see if I can find something else.

man, y'all going to have to start paying me doing this research. LOL.

In comparison, the top teams in draft pick retention during that period were:

    • Kansas City Chiefs: 85.7%

    • Cleveland Browns: 83.9%

    • Green Bay Packers: 78.4%

    • San Francisco 49ers: 80.0%
Conversely, teams with lower retention rates included:Over the Cap

    • Jacksonville Jaguars: 60.0%

    • New York Jets: 62.5%

    • Las Vegas Raiders: 62.1%

    • New England Patriots: 60.5%
Steelers rank slightly below average of 2009 to 2023?

agreed. and that would just have been way to much work for me to figure out. but if they got a second contract, that means the steelers at least thought they were worth something. and if they got a third contract that let me know the steelers really liked them.

No, he wouldn’t have been available in the third. That is made up nonsense that doesn’t fit the available evidence.
There was information the experts did not have about Sanders. They didn’t know how badly he ruined his value in interviews.

Just throwing this out there as well. I don't usually try to compare jobs in the public sector with playing in the NFL, or with any pro sports job. I find it interesting though, when hiring for public sector jobs the ratio is approximately 1in3 hires 'works out' in any short or long term capacity. Basically, for every 3 hires, 1 hire becomes a decent to good hire.
You listed 120 drafted. 40 reach 2nd contract. That maths out to that same 3 for 1 ratio. Like I said earlier. I don't try to draw comparisons here. Just strange that it works out the same though.

    These numbers aren't adding up.
    • First, the OTC article you linked has nothing to do with individual team performance in overall draft pick retention. Plus it's looking at top draft pick retention from the years 2004-2011. Your original post was the Steelers overall retention rate from 2009-2023.
    • Further, you can't get an accurate read of second contract percentage on any class after 2020, because first round picks from 2021 are just entering their fifth year in the league. We won't know if they get a second contract or not until the end of the season (picking up the fifth-year option isn't a second contract). 2022 and 2023 shouldn't be included whatsoever.
    • Regarding the comparative retention rates, I find it extremely hard to believe that the Chiefs have signed 85.7% of their draftees to second contracts when the studies I've seen (whose date ranges I'd have to go back to reference) cite on average only 31% of players drafted receive a second contract with their original team.
    • Moreover, you list the Patriots as having the lowest retention rate, at 60.5%, and state the Steelers are slightly below average. Your initial post shows the Steelers drafting 120 players and signing 40 to second contracts... that's a 33.3% retention.
    • Last, your initial post states of the 120 players the Steelers selected, 40 received second contracts and 70 didn't. What happened to the other 10? You list 10 were signed to third contracts, but that would be a subset of the 40 they kept for a second run.

Well, it's not that I dislike it, I'm just saying those classes are incomplete, so it makes no sense to include them.
