That's ignoring some serious context. They did go 3-3 in playoff games over the next three seasons, making it to the Championship Game. Unfortunately, the injuries started after that. Had Luck stayed healthy who knows what would've happened. Mahomes might not have been to 18 SB's in 7 years. That certainly would've been worth a team shutting it down in a season that they clearly were not going to win the SB anyway. Much like the 2025 Steelers.

They have a lot of ammo to move up next year with or without tanking.

And the colts would been much better with Luck if their front office was not that bad too

Funny thing, Angotti, the Penguins' head coach during the 1983-84 season, even admitted that the team made a conscious decision to finish with the worst record in the league to increase their chances of drafting Mario Lemieux. E.J. was asked if they did underhanded things to get Mario, he said "You gotta do what's best for your franchise."

Though, it was a decision that saved the franchise. It does happen, and it has worked.

I'll say that my childhood isn't mad at the Penguins for giving me Mario.:lolol:

I'm glad they've made a conscious decision to stockpile picks to move up.

I think that's why they bypassed on a lot of FA's we thought they might go for because they wanted the picks instead.

Would that be considered tanking, choosing not to maximize your chances of winning now with an eye towards the future?

Correct if the Steelers start the season with Mason Rudolph as QB and Robert Woods as their #2 WR then they won't have to tank. They can give all the effort they have and still have the worst offense in the league.

We don't have to tank, but I do think we've missed some opportunities to improve the team. It definitely is a bit weird to trade Pickens now when we had the rest of the offseason to get a WR2 and didn't. That doesn't mean we can't still get one (I think we almost have to), but its been a weird one.

I am never worried about losing to the Bengals. The Steelers will at least split wins with them. Joe Burrow may own teams that have weak defenses but he struggles under pressure which all of the AFC North seems to bring. Lamar Jackson always seems to have trouble against us also. And the Browns. Well, they are just the Browns. I think we go 3-3 in division games if not do better.

Ryan used to be a Sports Analyst who could be one of the best in the industry. I now see he has fallen into the same trap as his colleagues. Sensationalism over realism; a hallmark of ESPN.

I will go one step further than @Steel_Elvis@Steel_Elvis; Ryan Clark is a self righteous Hypocrite. Anything to make himself look good he will either state or act upon. It is a shame but I shouldn't be too surprised given how he rode Troy's coattails to success.

The context is there. They tanked a season for the #1 overall pick to take Luck. They still did not win a SB even after tanking and drafting their target QB. The rest is projection and speculation. Bottom line is it didn't work. They even dumped P. Manning in order to tank because we know he would not go for that. In fact, P.Manning went on to win another SB ring after. The Colts never managed that. Even after tanking to 'suck for Luck', and getting him. Are we now supposed to 'tank' for Garrett Nussmeier? Drew Allar?

Tanking is 100% wrong. I never want to see it (no sarcasm). Now, if they just play like crap and finish low, that is different and is fine.

For the last 3 years I find it difficult to believe I ever rooted for this guy.
