That's my point. If you thought he could be your guy for the future, you couldn't come up with a two year deal for $40 million? But they'll probably give Rodgers $40 per season.

That's what really leads me to believe that Fields might not have been the plan. He was already established here. He knew the offense, the contract is very affordable for only 2 years, and you obviously didn't have a good back-up plan if you didn't get him. What happened? How did you blow that? Seriously. And now, you're standing there with your cheese out in the wind. I think that either they didn't really want him all that much, or he was salty and told the Steelers to suck it.

I didn't even want Fields, but when they publicly said they wanted at least one of those two back, then both signed short contracts elsewhere for money they could easily afford, and now they're left with a guy that they've been trying to shake off like a deer tick for years, I have to question wth they're doing.

They might have wanted Fields, but at their price, not his. They saw enough of him last season to know whether he could be the future franchise and they clearly decided he wasn't otherwise they could have matched the NYJ offer. And who knows, maybe they did but Fields said thanks, but no thanks. So why overpay for that?

It would appear the Steelers saw enough to know Fields was not going to be their starter and made an offer accordingly

Fields says his benching didn’t play a roll in leaving.

The Jets offered more money and the Steelers offered no guaranteed money past the first year.

I think it probably means the Steelers are all in on drafting a QB and we’re only looking at Fields as a stopgap so naturally they wouldn’t want to give him guaranteed money past this season.

Four (5 counting Rudolph) starting QBs in the last 3 seasons, along with 2 OCs. That's approaching Browns territory.... oof.

I think the Steelers problem was offering less guaranteed money than the Jets.

Yeah, they're so confident in Mason they're playing the waiting game with a 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers .

At this point I don’t want Rodgers. If he were all in on the Steelers or playing another year he would have signed by now. He has held the team captive at this point to the extent we can’t move forward with other offseason moves. The fact we don’t have an innovative offensive coordinator I’m sure swaying heavily on Aarons mind, along with Broderick Jones protecting his blind side.

Why would Rodgers sign before the draft? There was speculation of him making some sort of announcement at the McAfee event, but he wasn't even there. The waiting is only tough on the fans. It gives both sides more time to think on their situation and make smarter decisions for themselves. If the Steelers draft a QB in the first round, it doesn't mean he's in competition now. It does probably mean Rodgers would only be here for one season. Is that what he wants? We as fans want a decision quickly so we can play on the mock draft sims.

Some fans are not understanding the situation. The Steelers gave Rodgers an offer based on his value to them for the season. That value isn't increasing as weeks pass. He's not more likely to win more games as time passes.
If Rodgers doesn't sign the Steelers will simply move to the next best value QB whoever that might be.

The issue is they aren’t willing to move forward with Watt until they figure out what is going on with Rodgers. They could have picked up a solid DT or more of a long term investment at CB this offseason if they weren’t investing this money in Rodgers. I believe if Rodgers is out there is a good chance they relent to the fact they need to blow it up and rebuild at this point. I could see them trading Watt and also Pickens this year if Rodgers is out. It would only make sense to move up to get Shedder if you really believe in him or accumulate draft picks for next year to move up.

I don't think Rodgers is holding them up with Watt or others. They've already made him an offer, so they know the potential money in play. It became obvious in FA that they were trying to protect their compensatory picks in 2026. This org historically doesn't blow things up and declare a rebuilding phase. They "re-tool."

Lots of talking about stocking up picks for next year. But the thing is not every class has equal talent at all positions. Steelers need to make picks when the quality is there. This year it's DL and RB. Next year, who knows? What you don't want to happen is a Terrell Edmunds in Rd1 because of a gaping hole.

Retooling makes sense when you have a team that is on the cusp of competing. I would not put us there. Does it make sense to commit alot of money to Watt and Minkah when we clearly are need in a franchise QB to build around? If we don’t think we can get one of this ethis year then let Wattt and Minkah go get a championship elsewhere and use the draft capital to build up the team until we can get our francjse QB.

The pickings are getting pretty slim. If Rodgers doesn't come to the Steelers then the choices are down to Carson Wentz, Teddy Bridgewater, Tyler Huntley and a possible return of Ryan Tannehill.

I'm not taking a side on the "who" debate, but I just want to point out that the Steelers' primary objective is to get to 500 every season. Every fan should keep that in mind when trying to make sense of what/why the Steelers make personnel decisions.

They just want to find players on a year by year basis to get to to 500 because they believe that keeps the stands full. One of the Rooney's said something like that a few months ago.
