For all the oldsters here - just saw where long time Pirate pitcher Bob Veale passed away at 89. The guy could really pitch and was sort of the poor man's Bob Gibson, amassing a plethora of W's, good ERA and strikeouts. He pitched on some very awful Pirate teams in the mid-late 60's but did get a WS ring with the '71 team. RIP Sir, well done.

BC needs to trade Keller to O`s for Coby Mayo plus 1 . I like Keller but Pirates really need some power. I think Keller would flourish elsewhere as #3 -4 guy.

 

Skenes/Keller/Jones. For a cheap ass team that is a decent starting 3. If, a big if, they all could have a good season together the Pirates could smell 90 wins.

 

Also depends on which Bednar shows up - very good Bednar or awfully bad Bednar. He won't have El Chapo to bale him out either when he falters. (No relation to SP Falter).

 

Bedar had a retty bad ear. If hew could turn it aoround next year that would be excelllent.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I was kind of hoping the other owners would do an intervention or something at the winter meeting, to try to persuade the owner to sell the team for the good of baseball. Unfortunately, Nutting doing.
Being a Pirates fan is kind of like being a Browns fan, in that the losing seems to go on and on, but the reasons for the losing are quite different. The Browns suck because the owner is an idiot who does idiotic things. Haslam has no idea at all what he is doing, and because he owns the team and because of his ego can’t allow someone competent to run things. He is not loathe to spend money, but he just spends it stupidly.
Nutting on the other hand always shops in the bargain aisle for free agents. Any trade first and foremost is a salary dump, and acquiring talent by trade is seemingly a secondary purpose. It is horrible to watch and won’t end until Nutting sells the team or the rules of baseball are changed to level the playing field. The NFL has made the decision to have a strong league. MLB has made the decision to have strong teams in the major markets, with small market teams relegated to the role that jobbers play in pro wrestling. The mess that is the Pirates is partly the fault of the owner, but it is partly the fault of MLB for allowing it to happen.
I have never heard anyone refer to a small market team in the NFL, have you?

 

The system in MLB is part of the problem, but that is never going to change. The owners prefer it this way. Even owners like Nutting, because it allows them to spend less money.

Nutting isn't selling the team. He is making money. He doesn't care about the city and he doesn't care about winning. The Pirates are wasting decades of the best ballpark in the game because they have one of its worst owners.

 

One of the sports card hobby’s most sought-after modern cards came to light Tuesday.

The 2024 Topps Chrome Update Rookie Debut Patch one-of-one autographed card for Pittsburgh Pirates phenom pitcher Paul Skenes was pulled by an 11-year-old collector in Los Angeles, the card company announced via social media.

Bucs want the card back. Not sure all they offered kid.

Livie offered the kid a chance to sit with her in a box for a game. As for me that card is given back as long as Livie can sit on my lap

 

Pirates are pulling a Steelers old trick of trying to go undefeated in Pre-Season/Spring Training - now undefeated after first 2 games piling up 15 runs. Beat em Bucs! Don't forget, Bucs had best record in MLB after first 2 weeks in 2024. Then the rest of the season happened.

 

Hey Steel, Rumor I heard was that the kid was considering handing it over for a season ticket, but when Nutting said he had to take TWO season tickets, the kid said “No way”.

What is sad, I pumped my fist in the air when the guy hit a Grand Slam in a meaningless game. I'll say this for them battling Bucs, they were only Pittsburgh sport team that won that day. Penguins got destroyed by Capitals 8-3 and Pitt BB lost to ND.

I hope the Pirates farm system produces a corner outfielder very soon. Left field is pretty big, and you essentially need two center fielders at PNC. It is not the place for a 36 year old with a slightly above average range factor. I bet he will be flipped for prospects (more likely, suspects) at the deadline.

After Skenes misses a start yesterday due to a rain out, Bucs lose a heart-breaker today against their old nemesis the Braves 2-1. The Sid Bream curse continues. Jones pitched well for his opener. Fortunately though, even with this loss, their Magic Number still remains 162!
