Alexander is a decent hire. He does need his type of guys to fit what he coaches.
Still, it is disappointing how the staff sees improvements.
Austin's scheme has not been anything special, and it looks like divisional foes have figured it out.
You just can't wear the same suit to church every Sunday.

Innovation just doesn't seem to be in the Steelers vocabulary anymore.

    So.....

Light a bigger fire in the room of the DBs but not the Offensive Line?! For that matter, not even attempting to improve the running game via a Run Game Coordinator or improve the Run Defense by hiring a Run Defense Specialist?! Intriguing indeed.

All I know is that the silver lining in all of this is that perhaps this level of intensity by Gerald Alexander will resonate well enough so that the miscommunication breakdowns of the secondary become less of a problem. If it wasn't being enforced in practice, it sure as hell showcased it during games.

If this solves just 2 things, our secondary will be improved:

    1. Confusion over assignments in man coverage.
    2. Having every single zone defender leave 5+ yards of cushion whenever a receiver enters their zone.

On the former, I don’t expect great man coverage without some better players in the secondary, but just having every receiver be accounted for from the snap and having players know when to switch off on red zone pick plays would be an improvement.

The latter is almost certainly a part of the directive from above, so I have no expectation that it will be fixed. The last time I watched every defensive snap on the All 22 was the Colts debacle, and I felt like pounding my head into the wall watching how easy we made it on Richardson to make obvious throws that even a RB could make. And then Flacco really exploited it.

a lot of the reason i wouldn't mind them bringing in a guy like rowe. a few guys that have been around and know how to help these guys. more of a player coach type. he didn't really play last year so he should be healthy enough. avante maddox from philly was another guy that played but philly was using young guys more so he didn't have ton of wear on him either. neither should break the bank and could be beneficial to the young guys and help us overall.
