I mean... all this tells me is Karl Dunbar could be next. Would be just as great of a mistake as letting go of Mike Munchak. Pittsburgh still hasn't recovered from that.

“Aaron Curry Out…” makes it sound like he was shown the door and is a bit misleading. Appears like it was his decision. Considering what he got out of mid-tier guys like Kwon Alexander, Cole Holcomb and Elandon Roberts along with development of Payton Wilson, he was a good coach.

it won't matter a great deal if the overall scheme of the defense is taken over by one guy. it can limit a position coaches effectiveness.

This is the Rooney way.:poopy: Big changes my ass.

Rather than getting rid of DC Austin, they let a coach who's contract ended walk away. Nothing changed for the Rooney way here. So disappointed to learn that DC Austin has made his way to the Senior Bowl with the Steelers last week. And, I can't wait to see Pat Meyer start attending Pro Days. :frustrated:

Austin doesnt surprise me, early reports on that were he wasn’t going anywhere and what would it matter, Tomlin is more involved with the defense than anything else.

I havent seen Myers name come up at the Shrine bowl or Senior Bowl so Im holding out hope there will be a change there.

Considering how players under him have been First Round players to even being Pro Bowlers or All Pros in the NFL during his time as a Defensive Lineman Coach dating back to 2002 (more on this in a bit), yes I did. For that matter, of the five All Pro Awards that Cameron Heyward has had in his career, four of them have been with Dunbar. Of those four?! Three were 1st Team All Pro (2019, 2021 and 2024). His only second team All Pro was in 2020.

One more thing to consider; Karl Dunbar is the understudy to Pete Jenkins; a man who is widely reputed to be the greatest Defensive Lineman Coach in the history of American Gridiron Football. Now, Dunbar actually started out as a Defensive Lineman Coach at Nicholls State from 1998 to 1999. After arriving at LSU in 2000 though, Dunbar would study under Jenkins until 2002 where he left for Oklahoma State. Dunbar being taught under Jenkins paid off big time in the subsequent years to come for his career. For that matter, given how Dunbar has consistently maximized the number of players who are IDL since Oklahoma State (Kevin Williams from the Vikings should sound familiar) to now, his loss would be immense. Even if the Steelers nab someone like Kenneth Grant (something I doubt at this point), that IDL would not nearly get the level of teaching that Dunbar provides.

Compare that to Mike Munchak; an Offensive Lineman Coach who was last seen as such in 2021 with the Denver Broncos. For that matter, after he left Pittsburgh, only Garrett Bolles became a Second Team All Pro in his second season. Bolles never became more than that afterwards. In addition, it isn't like Munchak didn't have great talent to work with; Quinn Meinerz and Lloyd Cushenberry being the other two. Neither developed under Munchak despite both being highly sought after prospects in the 2020 NFL Draft. Munchak is now an Offensive Consultant for the Los Angeles Rams.

Long story short?! Munchak's only claim to fame with Offensive Lineman have been with the Killer Bs era along with his prior stint as an Offensive Lineman Coach; Kevin Mawae and David Stewart being his two major accomplishments. Dunbar's credentials far exceed his; Kevin Williams, Sheldon Richardson, Muhammed Wilkerson, Marcel Darrius, Kyle Williams, Jerry Hughes and even Cameron Heyward have all either benefited to greatly benefited from the likes of Dunbar. His Collegiate track record is also very notable; DaRon Payne, Johnathan Allen and Quinenn Williams all being Top 20 picks; both Payne and Williams being top 15.

Karl Dunbar has left his mark on the game of football as a Coach far more than Mike Munchak did. His time in Pittsburgh was a classic case of being at the right place at the right time. Dunbars has been proven time and time again. Him leaving actually would be more damning to the IDL development given how there is only Keeanu Benton to work with at present.

Don't sell Karl short @jeh1856@jeh1856. You of all people should know how important a Teacher is to a Student. John Mitchell was instrumental in the tutelage of the likes of Casey Hampton, Aaron Smith, Brett Kiesel, Stephon Tuitt and a younger Cameron Heyward (his first All Pro being Mitchell's final year in 2017). Karl has done the same thing for others; Keeanu Benton being another one despite his Sophomore Slump.

Aaron Glenn and Aaron Curry. Both played in the NFL. Were they ever teammates? Did they have the same representation? How does Aaron Glenn even know about Aaron Curry?

I thought he left on his own. If he was fired, the person letting him go should have been fired.

Munchak left on his own though he wanted to be closer to family in Colorado.

Why couldn't the Steelers make a move like this? He will be a DC in the NFL in a few years.

I believe that Dunbar's contract is up this season. This also means that he too can leave on his own. My point though is that him leaving would be devastating for a positional group in dire need of both an injection of youth, talent and the right teacher.
