I know this will sound like sour grapes, but...Only Lewis played a significant role in the team's 8-8 season. Wallace is overrated. The rest are not worth crying about.

And wasn't David Johnson technically a free agent signing?

I don't completely disagree, but there's a rule in sports that if you want to be successful, you need to replace talent with talent. I hate Mike Wallace and I'm glad he's gone, but he was talented. Mendy was talented. Lewis was talented. We do need to replace those guys with somebody that has some talent or we're going to be in trouble this year.

I like the Plax signing. I think there's a realistic chance he plays a very large role for our team this year. I don't think he's washed up just yet. He's like Ward, he doesn't rely on blazing speed to get open, so age isn't a huge factor for him.

As for Foote, like Pat Kirwan said the other day on Moving The Chains, forget drafting someone to play behind Foote, get someone to play in front of him. Foote is mediocre at best.

Yeah, I am used to not signing big name free agents.
I think Ryan Clark and James Farrior, are probably the most signifigant signings we have made in that regard, since Jerome. Was Foote a free agent?(and I don`t think any of those were considered "star-caliber" players, when we signed them)
Anyhow, I am also not used to seeing so many of our talented players departing, without capable back-ups on the roster, as we have last year, and this...
It remains to be seen how our younger players we already have, pan out.
But I don`t have the same confidence in these previous "role-players", as I did in some of our past "role players".
It always used to be easy for me to say that our 2nd stringers, would be starting for most other teams, they are just stuck behind pro-bowl type players.
    Now, I`m not so sure.
I sincerely hope Worilds, Hood, Heyward, McClendon(Who I actually DO have a good feeling about),Cortez Allen, etc can continue the tradition we have on that side of the ball.
But, before, I was not as worried about the replacements stepping in. I had more faith in them.
On offense, It doesn`t matter what I think of Mendy as a person, or Wallace as a person...
I agree that those are big holes to fill.
    A. Brown, MAY replace Wallace satisfactorily,(if he goes back to what got him that contract), but who is gonna draw the coverage that Wallace did?
And I do think that Plax is gonna help us in some third and short/ endzone situations. I`m glad we signed him for this year, even if I thought it wasn`t a great idea to bring him back here in the 1st place...
Still not sure if we have E. Sanders for this coming year?
Not great, but showed flashes if he can stay healthy.
No problem with Cotchery, but, to me he is just a reliable reciever, to make a first down, here and there, not someone the defense is gonna be scared of.
As for our new, young, O-line...
Sure they look great on paper, and I hope they play to their potential, but, other than Pouncey, none of them is proven. And even he worries me, with regards to getting hurt.
    Runningback????
    Alll average at best.
Not saying any of them suck, but we sure do need to improve there...
Basically what i am trying to say, is, I agree, we seem to have lost more talent than we have replaced.
I still think we can compete, and have a chance to get to the bowl, but it`s gonna be based on what a lot of young players can do...
Not the Vet`s that we are used to.

Agree with your assesment up to this point myron, a whole lot of work
still needs to be done to make this club a competitive play off team. I am seeing
a return to the 80's Steelers with one big catch, a franchise qb that has little or no
young talent to help him out. Everybody laughs at me when I say we have to hit
home runs in this draft. I am counting 3 new Starters needed from this draft alone.
