I go to a half dozen afternoon games a year

For me it’s just a nice day out and a couple of cold beers

Next day I couldn’t tell you who won

For the Steelers the next day I can recite every play

    They are ok

But nostalgia takes me back to days of sitting on the porch with my grandfather

    Nothing will match that

Every time I think of the Pirates now I think of Colonel Trautman calling out the names of Baker team and Rambo saying they are all dead sir. We could be dangerously heading towards that feeling with the Steelers if they don't get this ship turned around.

Without looking it up I will try to name them. I'll edit after I post.

Rambo, Messner, Ortega, Jurgensen, Berry, Krakauer.

EDIT: Dammit, forgot Coletta! :roflmao: So close.

A more likely scenario is Paul Skenes will be traded before the Steelers win a playoff game

I can't really remember Maz's home run on the radio but I do remember all of the commotion afterwards. My dad and my Uncles hoisted a few beers after that improbable win over the Yankees.

I would have to say my favorite Pittsburgh title was the 1971 World Series win by the Pirates. I remember before the Series they were asking the sportscasters on TV their predictions and Howard Cosell said that the Orioles were so much better than the Pirates that he picked Baltimore to win it in 3 games. Probably second was the one for the thumb win over the Seahawks. Back in the 70's you took it for granted when the Steelers won it all but after a 26 year drought that win in Superbowl XL was special. As far as hockey goes I have to admit I've never watched a game in my life. There was no hockey on TV while I was growing up and the Penguins didn't even exist back then so I just never had an interest in it.

    Ditto

But I met my wife in Chicago and we moved to pittsburgh. She is a big baseball fan and I have been a Steeler fan for a long time. So we naturally bought a 1/3 season ticket to the Penguins. That was 1990. They promptly won their first Stanley Cup. We continued for 10 more years until we moved north.

I almost forgot about another pro sports title in Pittsburgh, in 1968 the Pittsburgh Pipers won the ABA title in basketball. They had Connie Hawkins who was dominant in the old ABA.
Of course in college we had Pitt who won the National championship in 1976 behind the running of Tony Dorsett.

That's a given, sadly. As mentioned earlier in this thread - current ownership has no interest in making that club a winner. It is truly all about $$

Edit: I'm being too harsh on Nutting. Well, maybe not really. But I think maybe I should've said as long as the Bucs are in the current market, with the current ownership, they will never truly compete. And Nutting is ok with that because he's making $$ by fielding bottom-of-the-barrel talent and/or past-their-prime stars to make us feel good for a moment.

Reminds me of Major League at times

It will Bob Nutting is only 62 and he seems determined to own the team until he dies, if only to spite the people who say he should sell.

You are not being too harsh on Nutting. The guy is one of the 10 wealthiest owners in MLB, yet he refuses to even try to compete. Owning a pro sports team is a sacred trust with the city, especially in a publicly-funded ballpark. Nutting is wasting the best ballpark in the game. Remember, when the team finally broke its string of over 20 years without a winning record and made the playoffs, Nutting's response was to cut payroll and raise ticket prices. Keep in mind that the Pirates have won two playoff games since 1992. Nutting has been the principal owner since 2007, but he has really been running the show since 2002.

    Are they though?

Not on the evidence gathered over the last week they're not.

I think Tomlin will leave or be shown the door before the Pirates win a playoff game. I think its all pointing up for the steelers after that.

This would require making the post season. If it takes 100 years, I still like the Steelers chances.

Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if the Pirates won a World Series before we do anything of note in the playoffs, much less sniff a SB.

IOWs, not in my lifetime at this rate.

Endless cycle with the Pirates basically being a farm team for the majors. Trade Skenes for what? More top draft picks to trade away. And the wheel goes round and round.

Unless the Pirates get bought by a baseball man with deep pockets there is no way in hell they make Playoffs. MLB is set up for small markets to make nice money if they keep their payroll low. Bobby boy is real good at it. No way in hell players want to play here knowing he'll dump them if bonus comes into play.

Next Playoff game won by a Pittsburgh Pro team will be the Penguins.
