Drew Allar

I'm not his biggest fan but I would take him over Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, I'm surprised Allar announced he would return to Penn State next year. With all of the QB needy teams in the league he's a top 10 pick.

 

Needs another year of progression. Allar made right choice. He has the prototype size for a qb.

 

Someone has finally begun to change their tune about the abilities of Mr. Allar eh?!


I kid, I kid. All in good fun.



On a more serious note, I echo the statement made by @Steelpens65. If this was the first quarter of the CFB Season of Drew Allar we are talking about?! Never mind a consideration... I'd take him with the first pick! Now?! Some still believe he will opt out of returning in 2025. However, I wouldn't get to excited even if he was entering the 2025 NFL Draft. A couple of reasons why (some as you said);


1.) Lack of QBs at the top: Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders..... that is, more or less, the 2025 NFL Draft Class of QBs. Everyone else is either spot starters or depth signal callers at that.


2.) Amount of teams in dire need of QB: Cleveland, Las Vegas, New Orleans, New York Jets, and even the New York Giants if neither Cam Ward nor Shedeur are to Brian Daboll's liking. I wouldn't rule out teams like Seattle either if the price is right via a trade up.


3.) Pittsburgh's current Roster issues: QB is definitely a need but WR 2 and CB 2 are absolute mandates. IDL is another need and may be the biggest (no pun intended) one of them all given that position groups age along with only having the likes of Keeanu Benton to rely on at present. If all other options are exhausted by Pittsburgh's pick I would entertain the idea but sadly, way too many other pressing needs.


Ultimately, I do hope Allar returns for he desperately needs to. His Fiesta Bowl performance was good but many of the same gripes I had with him still remain; namely his footwork and reads both pre snap and post snap. Another year of positive development under his belt and there is no doubt in my mind that Allar will likely be within Top 20 Discussion in the 2026 NFL Draft; a Draft loaded with QBs.

 

I would not take this guy. He looks very unathletic and clunky to me. Not a fan.

 

Best for the Steelers to wait till 2026 for a QB. Unless they like a QB a bit later in the draft to develop like Will Howard.

 

I think he can develop, when he is on his ball has zip, right now to many errant throws and indecision.

 

I'm not completely sure after his performance in the bowl games he won't turn pro this year. If so that puts Penn State in a bad situation going into next year. Pribula left via the portal.

 

I'm not a big fan of Allar's. I don't see the high end potential. He has the right frame and a good arm, but that is about it. He has a lot to be desired in the accuracy department, and whether or not he develops reading the field is as big of a crap shoot as it is for every other college QB coming out. If everything breaks right for the kid, I could see him becoming Mitch Trubisky. Just a personal take on it. If a team REALLY wants to give him a shot, he needs a solid 2-3 years to develop. Huge project, and not one that I think is worth the investment. He's a day 3 pick to me. Maybe day 2 if you fall in love with him.

The only QB I like at all at this point is Ward. I think he projects as an NFL QB, and could end up being a decent starter. Sanders has too many question marks regarding his leadership, and he's not as polished as a prospect either. Milroe is a true "swing for the fences" pick. He could be Jalen Hurts, or he could be Anthony Richardson. He is also a huge project, but the ceiling is much higher. Ewers actually is a safe bet to be an NFL caliber player... Just I am not sure his ceiling is super high. He needs to be in a Kliff Kingsbury type offense, or something akin to the old "west coast" style. He could be an Alex Smith level player in the right spot. He's probably a decent backup in the league otherwise. Good enough to be out there, but not good enough to hold onto a starting job.

Anyone that needs a QB really bad is probably better off hoping to end up with Arch Manning next season anyways. There is a bit better talent at the position next season, but that can change with another season in the books.

 

After that poor performance against Notre Dame Allar returning to school next season is the right decision.

 

Allar needs to learn to control his emotions and work on his foot work. I think his accuracy issues are rooted in poor fundamentals.

 

You might be right. I have only really seen him play about 6-7 times (Michigan games, OSU games, CFP, and BIG championship vs Oregon), and he has really weird accuracy issues. He misses a LOT of plays that should be pretty routine. He throws a couple really nice ones a game, he's a decent runner when he gets on the move, but he seems to miss a ton of plays throughout the game. I've been pretty down on him as a NFL prospect, but what do I know? Lol.

I am a bit conflicted as to whether or not he should stay. This year's QB class is getting thinner by the day as some of the higher rated guys hit the portal instead of declaring. He could very well be viewed as a top 2-3 QB by some NFL teams. Next year's class looks to be a lot deeper. Unless he greatly improves, I could very well see him be the 7-8th best QB and drop quite far down the board (Manning, Iamaleava, and Nussmeier being much better prospects, and the possibility that guys like Beck, Moss, Sellers, and Leavitt could push ahead of him). I still think teams value his blend of size and capable running ability to go with a pretty live arm, so he could be viewed as a better prospect than that by some... but if Ewers goes back to the portal, I might consider the draft if I am Allar. This would be his best shot at being a 1st or 2nd round pick, as I think he would be viewed as a higher tier prospect than the second tier QB's (Dart, McCord, Leonard, Howard, etc.) and should be competing with Milroe to be the 3rd QB taken.

It just depends on what he values. Getting into a position where he gets drafted as early as possible (giving him the best chance at a long leash in the NFL with whoever spends high capital on him), or going back to school to try to improve his stock and see where it takes him. Its risky to go back, but if he improves a good bit then it would be worth it.

 

Allar makes really dumb throws. If he's pressured he loses it. Not a 1st round pick

 

He has another year to work on it but I’m not optimistic of the growth scale

Absolutely not. He is unatheltic, clunky, terrible with progressions and can’t read the field. Not to mention he panics in big moments in big games.
