You know why players play with a lack of effort? Because they lose faith in their coaches and they are already defeated before the game starts. Sometimes you have a player on your team that transcends that lack of faith in a poor scheme or coaching like we did when we had Rothelisberger in his prime. We also still had Lebeause defense that we did have faith in back then.

You ever notice the really good teams don’t need or have those raw, raw coaches because that gets you no where in this league and it isn’t sustainable game to game throughout a season. The great coaches breed confidence in their players because they have a fundamentally sound and art scheme that positions the players to succeed. The players trust in it and they play freely to their athletic ability. Chuck Noll or Belicheck never had to worry about tapping into their players emotions to rile them up for a game or to give them confidence. The players were already very confident because they trusted in their coach. They knew their coach was going to have their back by providing them with a good sound game plan that was going to work on Sundays and position them to succeed.

This whole lack of communication or effort or coming out flat or mistake prone football wether it is poor line play or tackling or jot catching the ball is lack of execution on the surface and yes that can happen maybe in a game or two but when it consistently happens year after year after year its more than that. The lack of execution is on the coaching and the scheme mainly because the players don’t trust the coaching and the scheme.

Terry Bradshaw said it best. Tomlin is a cheerleader he isn’t a coach. Bradshaw knew what he saw because he was under a real coach when he played for Noll. Tomlin could still be a good head coach if he swallowed his pride and recognized this and got out of his own way and actually hired real competent Coordinators but in order to do that his flaws need to be pointed out to him by Rooney and he needs to accept that. I don’t think that will ever happen.

You had me until “Knoll.” Seriously, I can’t disagree. It was time to move on years ago, and the evidence just keeps mounting.

Wasn’t he the coach before Cower and Tomlinson?

There's no way the players are buying into Tomlin's stone age football.

100% agree with this. Our schemes on both sides are awful, and players aren’t stupid - they know this. Execution is tough if you can see the play has little chance of success. How does Najee feel running into a stacked box for the first play each week? How does a DB feel playing 10 yards off the line when the receiver only needs 5 yards for a first down? How does TJ feel knowing he has to beat a double team all on his own (not sure about that one, but there is no creativity to spring him). How does Minkah feel when he is playing center field so far away from the play?

We need a complete overhaul of our schemes. I don’t blame the players for the most part.

It’s both scheme and execution. The offensive and defensive schemes are painfully simple and predictable. Even with that, we still see players looking lost, playing out of position and not communicating.

While Tomlin always blames the offense for everything.

The most evident one is the MLB’s. We go and get coverage linebackers and we offer them no protection. We have gap penetrating Dl who aren’t big enough to maintain two blockers or gap maintain so these smallish linebackers are asked to take on blockers as well. We have been throwing bodies at that position for how many years now. For smallish quick linebackers you have to have them flying up to the line scrimmage and penetrating the gaps to take advantage of their speed. You have to have 350 lb DT’s that take up multiple blockers in front of them that push the pocket and maintain multiple gaps. Those big DT’s push the pocket they don’t allow the QB’s to step up and away from eh edge players either.

You also need to play the ILB’s up in press man every once in awhile instead of being flat footed in zone. By the way we don’t know how to coach zone we suck at it. We don’t know how to disguise coverages or blitzes. It is just awful and Tomlin is literally the DC. Its so frustrating.

What about Pride, Passion, Guts,Heart? Nobody showed anything.
Has to be embarrassing to all involved. I hope the Rooney family saw
what so many of us saw and make quite a few changes this off season.
We should all have a letter writing drive to Art Rooney 2 voicing our displeasure
    with current team.

Devil's advocate here: they probably feel 'ok' about it if that's how the coaches are prepping them. Just saying.

Pretty obvious early on last night. There were moments it looked like most of the D was playing in a Pro Bowl.

The gorilla in the room is the Rooney rule and perception. Mike Tomlin is not going anywhere short of a complete collapse that results in a two or three win season (probably for two or three years in a row) or a voluntary movement by Tomlin himself. Even though Tomlin has already had the job for two decades, I just can't see the Rooney's letting him go because of the perception involved around that.

I am a believer in competence. I don't care how old you are, what sex you are, what color you are, or in any other metric. I want a head coach that is a leader and can lead the team to victory. Right now we do not have that.

The Rooney's have already doubled down on Mike Tomlin by giving him another multi-year contract for big money. He's in a tie for third place on the highest paid NFL coach. There is no reason for Tomlin to look at any other career or move in his life with a paycheck like that coming in every year.

The coach I was really hoping to get was DeMeco Ryans when he was available. Of all the new coaches in recent years, he has been the one that seems to have the most energy and intelligence. A close second to that energy and football smarts from the newer breed of coaches would probably be Sean McVeigh. But Tomlin had another winning season and wasn't going anywhere. :(

How do you play with pride, passion, guts and heart when you know schematically your already set up to lose? You can only bang your head against the wall so many times before you lose interest.

No that isn’t it at all. Its Rooney is tied into the legacy of his father and Grandpa of not making any changes. He is paralyzed now about making change. Tomlin has won just enough to make it really uncomfortable to make any changes. Tomlin has alot of great attributes but his arrogance and ego hold him back from some glaring weaknesses which is hiring good Coordinators and actually empowering them to coach. I just don’t buy that Tomlin is that good at X’s and O’s. I think he is a good Mentor to the players and the players really like him and try for him. I think the frustration is because the players like him so much they are willing to try even though they know the scheme is not adequate. As a result it causes alot of frustration. These players are willing to fall on their sword to protect Tomlin and blame it on execution when they know it is scheme related.
