Hell I don’t even mind if they keep Tomlin, so long as they force him to hire some young innovative coordinators AND let them do their jobs.

since MT is still valued in this league, if he lands another HC job, there might be offset languages in his contract that reduce or even eliminate the amount that the team would have to pay.

You and I disagree on this and the rooney rule played no role in his hiring per Rooney, however the optic of letting him go when there are so few minority head coaches would be a PR nightmare. Honestly if I am the owner I don't want to deal with the blow back. Every time the topic has even come up in the past the rallying to Tomlins defense is amazing. Remember the flack TB came under when he said I don't know what he does. That optic doesnt look good. "How do you fire a coach that has never had a losing season, won a super bowl, the players love him, give you a chance very year". Just not worth it as an owner, let the two years go by now and just don't resign him. No optic of firing him, etc. the mistake was extending him.

 

I mean, literally the only racist thing mentioned in this thread is the Rooney Rule itself, if that's what you're suggesting. It is, intrinsically, a rule that treats people differently based on skin color, which, if that is not literally the definition of racism itself, then I don't know what is. And we shouldn't criticize it because...why exactly? And before anyone finds fault with my question, you can find many a Black person in the NFL - as well as outside of it - beyond who have openly stated that they have serious problems with it, and who believe it should be abolished immediately. And I would agree with them.

 

I believe he has a no trade clause. And his future team giving up draft capital would not be in his best interest. He would probably prefer being fired.

After last night, I doubt a HS team even wants him. I hung out with my Bengals friends last night and every one of them said Tomlin sucks. They have a history of crappy head coaches and they wouldn’t even want Tomlin. Don’t worry though he will be back next season and we will get the usual non losing season garbage and all thee media will continue to call him a HOF HC.

 

Like they did the OC last year!

 

Any time I read someone trying to use the Rooney Rule as an excuse I immediately think one of two things

Racism whether they want to admit it or not even to themselves

Stupidity for not understanding the rule
