I dunno, I just don’t think Fields will ever be a franchise type QB. That’s just my opinion, but of course we’ll see what the march of time proves. Talented yes, but a QB you can build a franchise around? Sorry, not buying it.
As for ole man Wilson. Man, when he has a New York minute, halle frick’n lujah! I’m actually surprised how good he has looked, yes even in the losses. What I saw in the horrible losing streak was an awful D, a disastrous O line, and poor coaching all leading to a HOF QB running for his life. This will make even the best of them look bad.
I can’t help but feel, after watching Russ QB, if he has a decent line in front of him that gives him time and receivers along with GP to throw to, well,, we’d have a better outcome.
With all that said, even HOF Russ is not the future. He’s the now while the hunt is on for Pitt’s next great franchise QB in the draft. We must never stop looking each and every draft.

We're playing needle in a haystack trying to find the next franchise QB, like many teams are, and many have done for decades. It's a soul destroying spot to be in.

It's not like you can play the elite defense+run game+game manager style and win it all anymore.

Not in the AFC at least right now. I've said it before, I'll say it again...you might beat an Allen, Mahomes, Jackson, Burrow once in the playoffs with an average QB, but very unlikely you're going to beat them two or three games in a row with an average QB.

And yet you failed to post a tangible retort; you just regurgitated someone elses thoughts.

You're the type of guy that would've continued playing in the band when the Titanic sank telling everybody it's all OK.

Okay SDOT yeah let's tank just to try and find a franchise QB , your idea is ridiculous and is never going to happen the Steelers don't operate that way.

Yes it is but you have to merry them with a good OL coach or we see regression like we saw with Jones. Yeah Meyer is under contract but he should have been canned last year with Canada and suck up the contract and go get a top OL coach. You live and die first with your O line. Why waste a year because you don't want to each a year on a contract when you realize he's the wrong guy. Just dumb.

Agree n that starts with a HIGH QUALITY OL coach being brought in to replace Meyer.

And that requires Tomlin to remove his head from his a$$

    IMO

And let's continue being stagnant whilst the defense ages and then the fall off by 2026 will be even harsher. That's a great alternative.

Yeah no team wants to deliberately lose games to get a better draft pick. The Raiders last week had the #2 pick solidified but they went out and played hard nosed football and beat the Jags and slipped to the #8 spot. The Giants had the #1 pick all gift wrapped and handed to them but they played the game of their lives today and beat the Colts. Afterwards they celebrated like they had just one the Superbowl. These are professional football players and want to go out and give their best no matter what their record is, they don't care about their draft position.

I’d rather throw money at Darnold but he likely stays in Minny. Wilson should at least be a lot cheaper. And he’s ok for now.

The Steelers are in a mini-rebuild so the fact they’re competitive is a bit surprising.

Look at the probable OL for next year. Three 2nd years, one 3rd year and one vet. That’s a line that should improve with time. Now they need to do the same on the Dline.

In my opinion there isn’t much point stressing over the QB until the lines are in place.

They just said the Franchise Tag for Darnold next year would be $40 million.

Would the Steelers be better off slapping Russell Wilson with the $40 million franchise Tag, rather than sign him to a 3 year contract?

3 years for $90 million or 1 year for $40 million?

Agree. I watched the Minnesota game today. Darnold was balling but he has time in the pocket and lives off play action. The system he is thriving in now just wouldnt work with the current Steelers Oline and receiver group. He should stay in Minnesota, unless they want to move to Mccarthy

Also agree that the Steelers need to fix the lines before anything else

The problem with the tag is that it all has to be accounted for on the cap sheet that year. That’s going to limit what you can do with the rest of the roster. Russ is nowhere’s near good enough to justify doing that. I’d offer him a three year backloaded deal while they try to sort the Oline out. The third year would be a team option

Id also try to keep Fields if he is willing to stay. He isn’t a viable starter now IMO but he is incredibly gifted and we have seen with guys like Geno, Baker, Darnold and even Lamar that Quarterbacks can improve if you give them time and put them in the right situation.

In fairness I think the team is trying to improve. The past two drafts have been good ones as far as we can see and they have made some good free agent moves

I posted on another thread that most of the best teams in the league acquired their Quarterbacks while they were competitive, Chiefs, Ravens, Bills etc.

You could argue that the Bengals got Burrow by tanking and they did make a Super Bowl so the idea isn’t totally crazy

Beat he Bengals, get on hot streak, Go Steelers!

I like Russ and his positivity. We have taken a beating these last 3 but easy to digest already being in playoffs.

After Steelers beat Bengals, watch out.

    Happy Hollidays all.

That's the thing. Steelers have an aging defense. They missed the boat by drafting Pickett instead of waiting a year to draft a QB in the first. The defense has a slim window before it totally falls off. We have to hope that a new OLC gets the OL into shape or they'll have to find stop gaps to fix the line. Then there's Pickens and I just see him looking for a trade before this year's draft. If the roster situation wasn't so volatile, I wouldn't be proposing such a thing. Something like half the current roster isn't even signed for 2026 & beyond. Benton, Queen, Highsmith and JPJ are the future of this defend to build around. The way I see it, trade now and acquire as much draft capital as you can now or face the inevitable falling off the proverbial cliff as early as 2026 but more likely 2027. Wilson nor Fields is the answer. I do admit that Khan has a 2 solid drafts to build around here and kinda why I want to turbo speed the rebuild as well. They won't go this route and it a massive strategic error in roster building.
