Steelers Sign...Matt Spaeth

The Steelers love those retreads they need depth at TE not counting on much from Heath Miller this season.

 

He's an excellent run blocker. Pro Football Focus had him ranked as the best run blocking tight end in the NFL in 2012. As a pass catcher, he's average at best.

I read this earlier. And plus we won't know for a while if he will even make the final cut...I think there will be a LOT more TEs in camp this year than the last 5 yrs or so. Now they can get more out of him and the 3rd rounder they spent on him.

 

I never thought he was as bad as some made him out to be. If he can become a bigger part of the offense with the absence of Miller I'm all for it.

Hopefully this spells the end of David Johnson's career as a Steeler. That guy is terrible and I still think his missed block of Clay Matthews on the Mendenhall fumble cost us the Super Bowl against the Packers.

 

I was really pleased when we first drafted him because he looked like a complete beast of a player. Then, he never really seemed to develop. Maybe that was the player, maybe it was the scheme. Maybe he's learned a lot from his year in Chicago, and comes back a rejuvenated player who is used to best effect. In any case, more camp bodies can't hurt.

 

Heck yes...I get blasted every time I say something that "doesn't" come to be....I am going to pat myself on the back when I get one right.

Never really developed in the Bruce ARians offense... things could be different.

 

This must have been what steel1031 was talking about earlier. I just realized this thread was here. I would take Spaeth over Johnson for sure.

 

I liked him as well. Like you said it was like he just fizzled out. Did he get hurt or something? Or am I thinking about the punter we had?

 

I like him much more than L. Pope.

Yeah. I know it's another, "Oh great, bringing in another re-tread" guy, but he's better than two of our other tight ends for sure, so... isn't this a good thing?
