Essentially, to try to make music stand out, producers have mixed every track in a mix louder, causing clipping on all instruments, which removes any dynamics from the music and also makes individual instruments stand out less. Here's a picture showing a normal track mixed the way it would have been in the 60s and 70s, then the same track mixed in the 2000s. The second wave shows that the peaks and lows of the audio are clipped off, and there are no dynamics in the track anymore.

This really came to a head with Metallica's Death Magnetic, which is one of the worst offenders. Here's an article that explains it pretty well:

And an article specific to Death Magnetic, which is one of the worst:

Covered this, and quite a few other songs by this band back in the day. Well in the early 2000s. Seems like back in the day.

Here is a lyric video of Paragraph 4 from Opeth’s new Last Will and Testament concept album. In this track, the dead patriarch reveals to his twin daughter and son that they are not of his loins. It features a flute solo by Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson at around the 2:40 mark. It’s a complicated song and takes more than one listen to fully absorb. So much creativity by Mikael Akerfeldt writing this album.
