I'll put my mock draft up (such as it is) prior to the draft, but if the Steelers can get comfortable with the back issue JJ would be a great pick at 17. The guy produces. Imagine this scenario, we pick JJ at 17 and Teo, because of his lackluster combine, falls into the second round and we grab him there. Am I dreaming?

Possible Ogletree will be there also. Besides his pot bust and dwi, word has it that he bombed the interviews at the combine. one scout referred to him as "an immature idiot"

If all that is true, then I would go ahead and pass on him as well. Talented players that are complete morons and have gotten into trouble aren't always a steal. Sometimes it really is wise to let them go.

As for Te'o, I can see him envision into the 2nd round, but not all the way to us. I think we'd have to trade up. Shoot, I doubt he makes it past Baltimore at the end of the first. I can even see them trading up for him.

But if someone labeled Ogletree as that, than I highly doubt he would even be on the steelers board. I think with Rainey and Ta'amu the FO is going to be gun shy on anyone who has major character issues. I know Colbert said if the right person came along with flaws they might be open to taking them, but i think they would have to be sorry and willing to change their life around. If Ogletree is "an immature idiot" as the one scout says, than I doubt he is willing to change any time soon.

As our brain trust has already proposed for questionable guys: a Mike Adams-type deal with strings and restrictions in the team's favor. Ogletree after the first round costs a lot less guaranteed cash. If he survives camp, bonus. Stays out of trouble/opening-day roster, bonus. Performance targets met, bonus. Stays clean, etc., ends up earning his full contract anyway.

The numbers are a bit misleading. Some of those players didn't get 2 years of production. Also coaching comes into play, scheme as well. There's so many variables that could impact those numbers. College production has value but it's not the be-all end-all of determining if a player will prosper as a pro.

The bad part is, the way society is going, and how children are being raised, there are going to be a lot of questionable characters in the labor pool... A lot less opportunity to be choosy on who the Steelers sign. There are idiots, there are football-smart-but-no-common-sense, and some guys make a mistake at a younger age(it may end up haunting them for a long time).

You can't exclude them all. But you can write contract language that protects the team and its reputation.

I like Mayock but he failed to mention that Ansah improved daily at the practices. He was also wearing football pads during the game, in which he was a terror to the opposing QB's. I'm pretty sure he wasn't wearing shorts.

4.5 sacks is not really a terror

First time seeing those numbers. Jones has got to be the guy at 17 if we go olb. At a high competition school putting up 14 a year, you can't complain or argue.

On a side note does anyone know about Williams from Uconn? 12 a year isn't shabby either then again weaker comp but apparelty playing out his peers.

I said in the Senior Bowl game.. Where he was actually allowed to display his talent. During the college season he played alot of NT and DT.. Just looking at stats won't tell you the whole story. This isn't Madden '13..

Yeah, UCONN is my alma mater, and I go to most of the home games. Williams is a pretty good player, but he had a really quiet 24 sacks over the past two years. I didn't really follow the stats during the year, and after his Junior season I was kind of surprised that he had rung up 12.5 sacks because it didn't look to me like he was impacting as consistently as some of the other guys. I think he's a legit 3rd to 5th round talent, but he's nowhere near as sure a thing as Jones (setting aside the neck issue).

Sio Moore is the real gem from UCONN's front 7. My only concern about him was that he had been listed at 229 lbs up until the combine. I saw him as being bigger on the field, but I assumed that he was lighter than he played because there would be no reason for the school to understate his weight - right? It's puzzling.... Anyway, he is a legit 240+, he has had enormous production in all aspects of playing LB (involved in a bunch of turnovers), and he's a leader on the field. I felt all along that he had no worse than 2nd round talent. Now that he was Mike Mayock's "Golden Corral Value Pick" at the combine, everyone else knows it too. By the way, I agree with Mac - he fits as an ILB in a 3-4, and I want him in the Burgh.

what i took from that is i want fla.st. defensive guru. look at the 3 guys from there. 59 sacks the last two years. i want there coach to help our sack attack. LOL:dancing:

elvis, whats nice about moore is he's one of those two for one players i talk about alot. if needed he could most likely hold his own off the edge for a game or short stretch. plus being a stud next to timmons.

i would grab some of the late guys as udfa's too. quanterus smith w.kent.. johnson san jose st. to name a few. might as well pack the cupboard with some young guys. hide em in arts basement if they have to. add this to moore and we would be sitting pretty.

i think worilds will be fine and carter and robinson will be better as we go. everyone thinks they're worthless for some reason because thats as good as they will ever get in the short time they saw them in camp and preseason.

there are some solid looking guys not at the top in this draft if they choose to wait. i still think ILB is a priority , even if foote comes back. he's got to learn. 2 spots if it's moore. but what rd. do we wait to get him? if he's who they want.
