We were talking football at work and this new guy gets in our conversation. (3 steelers, 2 cowboys and a redskin-new guy) We get the usual, 'wait to RG3...' And then the usual, 'yall better watch out for them cowboys', which I respond, 'yep been watching and waiting 17 yrs now'. :lolol: Then the conversation gets kinda serious, no smack talking, just talking problems blah blah blah.

The new guy says the Redskins should play Cousins one quarter and RG3 the next so the defense is confused. And some other questionable comments, then.... here it comes...... The redskin guy goes, 'the steelers biggest problem is Big Ben'. I ask him if hes serious and he is. I look at him, '2 superbowls and a took us to a 3rd and you think Ben is the problem? Are you crazy?' Of course now the other 2 steeler fans jump in and he high tails it out of the break room. I kinda figured he was a band wagon fan or something.

I m sure some of the Ben haters will jump in now and agree.

To me he would have started to sound like Charlie Brown's teacher after his 'rotating Redskins quarterbacks' theory.

I would have excused myself after that comment.

Rotating QBs. Oh yeah, that's worked in the past.... Tell him to go back to playing Madden, because that's obviously his view of what football is.

Depending on how he was looking at the situation he very well could be right. Now this is not a bashing Ben post this is a let's not fool ourselves post. First off if you look at the cap numbers the are provided in another thread Ben's 2013 cap hit is close to 20mil heck his base pay with out bonus is, if I remember correctly 11 mil. That is a huge amount of money tied up in one player. Now provided they work the cap magic again and turn all that base pay into bonus money like they have in the past it just pushes the problem further down the line to deal with next year or the year after with that bonus money getting bigger, if I understand the way they structure it correctly. That is just the business side of it, Now lets looks at the personnel side of things.

How much time do you invest in Ben, that is a big question that needs answered and could be a big problem. He is already the most sacked QB in the league and has taken a huge amount of punishment already. How long before his body begins to fail? I have stated in the past I thought he had three good years left to him where his natural athletic ability and talent allows him to play the way he does without dropping off too much, that estimate included this season and also depended on if he changed his approach to lessen the abuse his body takes. He did somewhat but yet he still suffered a serious injury. So now they have to look at how long he has left and think about bringing in someone to take over when he is done. That opens up more problems.

It will be a hard sell to teach a young QB a system when your Veteran QB is openly admitting that he is throwing in signals and plays from his previous OC's playbook because he liked that guy better. Now you can say well Ben has two rings and been to the dance three times he has earned the right to do as he pleases but that isn't a winning strategy when you are trying to build team unity with a group of young guys. Now Ben has earned the right to have some control over how he practices and how he does things, I won't dispute that I am simply pointing out it will be problematic to try and teach a young QB not to make certain mistakes when he see's Ben make them and not get called on them.

Now is any of this going to be the Steeler's biggest problem in 2013? probably not nor will it be the one that keeps them from the playoffs in 2013 or even 2014 but it is a big problem that will have to be addressed and at some point we as fans will have to come to gripes with Life After Big Ben.

Don't we have to do that with every player on the team?

Just one comment, for all of you that think Ben is invincible
He is not,he has taken alot of hits over his career. His body is breaking down
right before our eyes.He is one tough Ombre, but he cannot get by
on athletic talent alone ANYMORE. Unfortunatley for us Steeler fans he may have
3 years of productive football in him. Learn to get rid of it quick Ben.

Everyone seems to think it's some foregone conclusion that Ben will sign an extension. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he either retires or hits the open market when his contract is up. He's taken a lot of hits and the injuries do add up. He's got a young family and they are not hurting for money. He also went from an offense designed for him by Arians to a this is what we're going to do offense forced on him by ARII/Haley. People love to say it's just the media creating a story, but it's pretty obvious all is not rosey with Haley and Ben.

I remember another QB who, wore #7, was an athletic guy when younger and took a TON of hits in his career. All he did was win back to back SBs in his late 30s. There was also a guy who wore #4. As I recall, he got hit a lot and played pretty well when he got older.............
As for the Redskins fan's comment, sounds to me like he spends too much time playing fantasy football.

Do you really think that Ben's personnel (right now) is favorable to what John Elway's teams where in their superbowl years?
As for Favre, How old was he when he won superbowls?

Of course our O-line isn't as good as the Broncos when they finally won the SB. but Ben's not 38 yet. As for Favre, he damn near pulled it off with the Vikings when he was........40? 41? Point being, don't write a quality QB in his early 30s off because he's been sacked a lot.

Nobody is writing him off, all I stated was that Ben HAS TAKEN a BEATING and
the effects are showing. I seem to happen remember that John Elway had
this RB I think Davis was his name not to shabby if I remember correctly.

Unless Ben does something stupid or has a major injury, he will retire a Steeler. If he tried to leave I think they would tag him. It would suck to see him in a Cardinals jersey. Some Steelers its just wrong to see them in anything but the black and gold; Bradshaw, Porter, Woodson.

Bradshaw was going to try and make a comeback with Tampa Bay in '84 or '85 but his elbow wasn't cooperating.
