Agree. That's the number I have as well. It's probably going to get a LOT bigger.

If you're hell-bent on sending players to the chopping block, the LAST place I would go (well, Ben would be the last place I would go, but other than the obvious) is safety.

The problem with cutting Ryan Clark -- other than him being THE leader on this defense, and playing at a productive level -- is that there is NOBODY behind him. If you're looking to cut people, at least look at some positions where we have some depth.

Come to think of it, I don't know that we really have any depth anywhere any more. OLB and DL, maybe.

ok let's see what they do , i was explaining a way for a drastical change since the thread was to have cap space in the future and since colbert sayd that nobody is married with the team and in an 8-8 nobody is safe
if they keep clark i'm glad if it was for me i would love to keep harrison too but soon or later they will have to move on .

The Steelers in general have always tried to pay ALL their players
a fair market value,And have been up against the cap for years. teams that do not
do this, are cheating there fans(Bengals)This is why you never heard BS in the locker room.
Everybody is making money. Now something has gone drastically
wrong? (lack of production from BIG MONEY people) TROY, WOODLEY, HARRISON, BEN, Kiesel,
you cannot have this lack of production when you are paying these players HUGE
amounts of money to perform. You ask well what is the solution. You have to find Gems
in the draft or else where to make an impact at a lower rate than what these guys are being paid.
Player evaluation is the most important job in the NFL.Can a player from BFE transition
to the pro game AKA AB 6th round draft choice soon to be all pro at both PR and WR.
By the way maybe if we would relieve AB from his punt return duties he could concentrate
more at the WR duties. I am not giving him a pass from last year, he played horribly
just like the rest of our offense.

to be clear i like the cap room because you can roll over in the next year and you can spend on some free agent , i like the way that we spend all the money to be competitive , only we should spend it where the production is back

Spending money on other teams' free agents is VERY overrated. For every one that works out, you can find at least a half dozen examples where the new team does not get the expected value. Just for kicks, I went back and looked at least year's free agent signings, and of the free agents who signed contracts of > $20 million (total dollars) with new teams, the VAST majority did not provide good value to their new teams. However, when you look at the cases where teams resigned their own free agents to big contracts, the success rate is much, much higher.

I want enough cap space to resign Lewis this offseason, and maybe also lock in McClendon to multiple years at a reasonable rate and re-sging Foote to a 1 year deal to bridge to whoever takes over next year. If we can also lock in Sanders at #3 WR money for a few years, that would be nice as well (although I doubt he would go for that). However, when it comes to looking at other teams' free agents, I want to play it the "Steeler way" and only go for the mid to low tier guys who provide value - like the recent conversations about Breaston. I also look at lower priced (backup caliber) O linemen who can fit our new zone blocking scheme, simply as depth replacements for the guys like Legursky, Foster and Starks who don;t fit the ZBS well, and likely won't be back. Finally, I look at at least one veteran backup QB who offers a bit more durability over a 5 game span than Batch or Leftwich. However, I completely ignore the "splash" free agents. Let other teams play those lottery tickets. Because, as we've seen time and time again, it usually doesn't pan out for them even if the guy seems like a sure thing (Nmadi anyone?).

i mean mid level free agents not big money , farrior and clark were good choice , we have to find new ones in the same mold

"Gems in the draft" soon receive "BIG MONEY" too #mikewallace #antoniobrown

You're absolutely right though. Our "BIG MONEY" peeps aren't producing. The challenge is, we were really stuck in a no-win situation with these guys. They were at the peak of their careers (all downhill from there), were playing at a high level, were irreplaceable, and demanded huge extensions (giggity).
Had we not extended ANY of those guys (Troy, Harrison, Woodley, Timmons, etc), all hell would have broken loose. However, rational thinking would have shown that they were unlikely to play at a level that they had been performing at at that time. Quite the pickle.

Tip of the cap to KAAAAAAAAAAAHN(!) for dealing with this stuff. Can't imagine what that dude's day is like. Sitting in a locked room with cap numbers and a calculator just crunching numbers all day. Walk past that guy's office door he probably sounds like Rain Man ("Eighty-two, eight-two, eighty-two . . . "). I mean, seriously, what else would that guy do throughout the course of his day other than algorithems and quantum physics to see how you can fit this kind of talent, with these kinds of contracts, into a cap?

Locking up Sanders now is a good idea. Especially when he just had a mediocre year and had fumbling problems.

He's an interesting cat. I met him in the Burgh prior to the game at Dallas and I asked him if he was looking forward to going home and playing in front of friends/family/etc and his response was, "Not really. I like the home games (Pittsburgh) better. Too much ticket stuff to deal with (getting tickets for friends/family/etc)." I thought that was interesting. I thought anybody would be thrilled to return home and play their first professional game in front of the people they grew up with.

It's probably fun after the game if you win, but I bet it's 10 times more distracting than any other week. And a lot more pressure, in addition to distractions taking away from your routine and your focus off the game.

He did have a bad year, but I still want to re-sign him. His problems were weird. Drops, fumbles, fumbles without being touched... Hopefully it will lower his price more than it should and we can get him for cheaper. And we still need another guy.

i'm banking on the old dog teaching these new receivers to be great, they already have the good in them. the distraction is gone. i think we will see a much more polished set of receivers with mann's help. i'd lock sanders up for sure.
