I think there is a lot of “outside noise” that is created by the sports media, much of which is largely ignored by the teams themselves.

How is that relevant to the thread?

He seems to be doing fine. He is doing what they ask of him, helping an improved run defense. His role is diminished because they aren't forced to use him on passing downs with Queen and Wilson.

Payton Wilson is playing a lot more than I expected this year. Talk about getting the most bang for your buck with your 2nd 3rd round pick.

Problem is ....the same media that creates this noise is the same media that votes for these stupid awards. Like MVP, DPOY, and so on.

He’s playing good. According to a stat I just saw, he had 3 tackles, an assist and a sack in the chargers game.

Solid player and good against the run, like a truck hitting you.

He wasnt taking a shot at Roberts, he was just asking how he was playing. He’s been low key this season.

Bingo. And a lot of these voters have agendas, biases, etc. They don't review game tape or even get to see most of the guys they vote for or against.. they rely on the word of their colleagues and stat sites like PFF to make their judgements.

I'm not sure how that qualifies as arrogant but so be it.

The thread seemed to be about his comments regarding PFF, which were enlightening. I know some fans here have been down on him because other than the sack, his contributions have been quieter. I thought you were among them. I think that is because he simply isn't playing as much, which makes him stand out less often. They had to play him every down once the injuries hit last year. I thought you were questioning the validity of his opinion by suggesting he wasn't doing well. If I misread that, I apologize.

That's fair. I probably misread the post. I thought that because some fans here have been down on him. I just responded and apologized if that is the case.

Yeah. He can be explosive when he gets to blitz. The run defense has been very good and he is a big part of that on first and second down. Dobbins had been tearing it up. The Steelers mostly shut him down. His longest run of the game came on a play when the defense had only 10 men on the field. (Sloppy by the player who was supposed to be out there and the coaches, but indicative of just how good they have been against the run so far.)

No, it's ignored by players, not by the teams. Analytics is a huge aspect of sports these days. It's not ignored by teams, although I don't think teams give a **** about PFF grades.

PFF grades are virtually useless, especially for skill positions where they can’t possibly know assignments on a given play. I very much doubt any coach or player even looks at them for any reason other than curiousity.

It’s baffling how much they have infiltrated media analysis though. TJ would have at least one more DPOY if it wasn’t for PFF convincing people that subjective stats like ‘pass rush win rate’ matter more than making actual plays.

I can appreciate your point about analytics and agree that those are part of the game.

My point was more about all of these new “stats” developed by PFF and others.

Yup, like pass rush win rate - which is not an objective measure, but rather a subjective measure based on what the person watching for PFF deems a win. I can go on and on with the PFF subjective “analytics” vs. legit analytics.

    I saw a quote somewhere that I liked -

“If you torture data long enough, it will confess to anything”.

Said another way, data can be manipulated to say anything.
