Why not? If a OT is the best player available draft him its not like the Steelers O-line is solid. Mike Adams and Marcus Gilbert haven't proven anything as starters.

I think Gilbert did just fine starting as a rookie...while he had his rocky moments this year before getting hurt he is still a starter and I think he will be fine. Adams looked good too in his time playing. I just don't think i'd spend a 1st rounder on someone and then be forced to bench a 2nd rounder neither of whom have shown they won't be able to hand the job(s). Now if they bomb after a couple years...sure, fine. But just for the sake of drafting them...I'm not sure. Especially when the team has many other areas of need. And we do not want to go through the issue they had with the OL for years...ignoring it to focus on other positions. Ignoring LB/S/etc much longer and they'll be in the same situation they were with the OL...either old players who arent what they were or sub/below par players at the positions. Now if they DID take an OT in the first...I'm not going to complain or whatever if its a good pick...thats just not what I would do based on the current situation(s).

This..I'd go so far to say that a Tackle is a luxury pick and we can't afford those right now.

though we do need some linemen, i'd be suprised if we pick one before the 4th minimum. the only way i'd possibly see that is if jones is there in the 2nd, since he fills the bill at every spot on the line if need be.

    Exactly some depth is needed.

In reality baring any unforeseen changes we know 4 of the 5 starters. Gilbert, Pouncey, DeCastro, and Adams...the only spot with the ? is LG (though DD could go LG and then RG would be the hole). With the rumors of Colon being canned (though it wont save much money)...and Beachum could take that spot who knows. Then you have Foster and Legs who are FA and might be back...then Starks a FA...and while I'd like him to stay (even as a BU)...if he finds a job elsewhere he's gone. Then all the have left is Malecki....and then the 2 PS guys Long and Cheadle. So in reality they only have Beachum and Malecki under contract and with any experience. They need another T in the mix. And honestly I'd like to see a vet FA guy in the mix...even if Foster and Legs both come back theres still 1-2 spots to fill (depending on Colon).

Yeah. An OT would only make sense if you were either going to play him at guard, or move Gilbert to guard. Otherwise, draft a guard or forget OL altogether. And with either or both of Colon and Foster floating around, that would be a luxury pick... Now, if you have plans to dump those guys, or can keep Foster at a backup salary, then I think you can stop calling it a luxury pick and call an OG a good pick, if he's got the value.

The "Adams and Gilbert haven't proven anything" is just stupid. They have plenty of room to go, but are both ahead of the curve as far as I'm concerned.

they are in cap hell right now, so i don't know if any of them will be given offers.

cheadle wasen't a terrible G. at cal. malecki would be the backup C/G , and with beachum able to at least be the 3rd LT and most likely more, i'd have to say the G/T type guy would be the ticket. thomas, jones, pugh, winters, thornton, nixon as possible draft picks.

i'm sure we see a C/G udfa somewhere down the road. unless they are going to teach beachum that spot too at least as the 3rd C. there was talk of it last year.

signing anyone will be tough this year. the smartest choice would be lewis. if they can afford him.
