Looking the analysis on Steelers Depot they did on Broderick it looks like he has the foot work down It’s the punch and extending the arms that he needs to address. I do think the arm brace has hindered that but he was struggling with hand placement and timing his punches last year as well. That extra inch would probably help him alot.

I don’t see it that way. Those space eaters can more than help the edge players by pushing the pocket back not allowing the QB to step up and away from the edge players. They may not get the sacks but decreasing the depth of the pocket is another way to effect the pressure and cause splash pays, sacks and turnovers. I just always liked the space eaters because it wass alot less stress on the MLB’s. Today your asking these guys to be fast enough to cover WR’s across the middle and strong enough to take on blockers and shed them to stuff the run. Thats hard to find that type of guy. Its alot easier to find a couple space eaters to maintain multiple blocks and push the pocket thus protecting your MLB’s and allowing them to flow freely to the ball carrier.

There is still time for him to fix those problems. He should have gone to the OL Masterminds summit with Frazier. Even Seumalo who was not happy with his play last year went to the summit this year. No other steelers lineman went.

we can go back and forth all day about this but the bottom line is they are a balanced defense with a few pass rush heavy stars. young and well coached.

if you read until the bottom it says it all. a balanced defense.

Thats what I am saying. Reid knows how to a build a team and they do it quickly. You have to adjust and build quickly in todays NFL especially when you have a Franchise QB because you only have that window for so long especially when they are on their first contract. It becomes a lot trickier once they sign that second contract. We have chosen to invest in the defense as far as the cap is concerned and the offense as far as the draft is concerned. There is no cap on the cost of coaches. You would think we would invest more heavily in that area especially on the offensive side of the ball. Look up SF’s coaches and how many they have. Its insane... they are like a factory for coaches.

I disagree personally. If the arm itself is injured, no matter how long the arm itself is, it will still prove to be a hindrance towards playing the position. RaShawn Slaters Rookie Campaign is an excellent example of what happens when technique and discipline can overcome even the most gifted of athletes. The way he handled Myles Garrett is very much something of note.

Regarding Broderick Jones as a whole?! As you said, it is technique based in terms of shortcomings. Andrew Thomas was the example I brought out for much of his weaknesses are near identical to Brdoericks; great feet but poor punch and placement. Now granted, Thomas had a lot more experience leaving Georgia than Broderick did but those were still concerns of Thomas' coming out. Look at him now.

In short?! Broderick clearly has regressed from year one to year two. That alone, doesn't mean it is over for him. What he needs to do is heal up first and continue to work on the finite basics. Once those are done, people will begin to see why he has widely reputed to be a Top 15 selection.

You know your offensive lineman. I really hope he can develop like Andrew Thomas has. What are your thoughts on Fautunu? Do you like the pick or no? Higher upside than Jones or no?

    pretty good video of jones.

feet. hands. just depends on what play. letting guys get to his pads. feet out of whack. playing too high. giving the defender the advantage. either side too. as i said it doesn't matter if he goes on the left side or not he's having the same problems.

I couldn't believe we got Fautanu in all honesty. Truth be told, I thought that the likes of JC Latham had a better chance of landing with the Steelers than Troy did. Fautanu was the most polished prospect among OTs coming out.

As for upside vs Broderick?! Broderick has Troy beat. There is still way too much untapped potential with Jones overall compared to Fautanu. That said, both have Franchise Tackle capability but I just believe Brodericks to be higher than Fautanus.

Alex basically as said what I did; the feet and hands themselves aren't the problem. Leverage, hand placement and strikes are. I disagree with the fact that playing him out of position has affected him though given the fact that, despite his limited time there, Left Tackle was still his primary position at Georgia.

Look at some of his sets when he drops. Feet are not properly set several times on either side of the line. Allowing defenders to get him off balance. I disagree that feet are good right now.

    Gotta agree to disagree then.

At Georgia, he didn't display any of these problems with footwork. Since coming to the Steelers?! Different story; feet work are still good but not for the position he needs to play.

I mean if someone can eat up two blockers consistently in the run game AND collapse the pocket with consistency in the pass game, you're just looking at a really good Pro Bowl/All-Pro level player. When I think of a space eater, I think of Hampton or Vince Wilfork. Even Aaron Smith was a bit that way, but he was good enough to chip in a handful of sacks here and there. The Space-Eater who collapses the pocket in the pass game and gets sacks is Hayward, and he is/was an EXCELLENT player. Penetrators can be really excellent players too, like Aaron Donald. It just depends on what you WANT to do, and how you want to run your defense. Space-eater types don't get much run in the league anymore, as modern offense kind of dictates that collapsing the pocket on the QB is worth more than taking up two defenders on run downs... so that is where its gone.

ILB's are going to have a rough go of it in today's NFL just because how the game is going. It is so much faster than it was 20 years ago. The TE's can run like WR's and there are a good number of RB's that can be a receiving threat as well. All of that on top of having to call the defense, stop the run, and sometimes spy the QB if it is someone like Jackson, Hurts, or Allen... Today's game is just REALLY hard on ILB's.

I think his feet are much better than his hands are right now. Saw a breakdown on Frazier from the Buffalo game and he looked pretty good. Sadly Dan Moore kept showing up on the tape for not good reasons on multiple occasions. They kept referring to him as 65 instead of by name. I think he us the better option until Jones can get his technique under control.

I agree I think it is the hardest position to play on defense. That’s why I think if you can have some some eaters in front if those guys it really takes a lot of pressure off of them and allows for them to flow to the ball more freely.

you don’t have to worry about thumper then either. You can go with smaller faster ILB’s that can cover the middle of the field in osss coverage.

i'm not too sure fautana shouldn't go to the left side. trouble is RT then. with cook hurt and moore not comfortable there it could be a problem but RT would be easier to find. just not here. :lolol:

jones looks like he needs to hit the weight room as well. he looked soft in the picture i saw from camp without his shirt. what he did at georgia has no barring on what he will do in the NFL. the boy needs to work at his trade right now. unacceptable at this point. can't live on the past accolades. i would like him to be good, but that's up to him. he has to put the work in.

does 2-3 weeks of rest fix him? what the hell happened - did he get injured in camp, or in the offseason and now we all just are hearing about it?

Did Tomlin know of this injury if it was months ago? Jones' comments make is seem like 'it is what it is'

it's one failure after another right now with this offense
