Guess there is no more onsides kicks? Thoughts on the new rule as we got to see it firsthand tonight with Houston vs Da Bears? I personally think there may be more run backs if returner gets through the first and only wave.

I did not know that. I think they changed the rules for safety reasons which I get but I don't agree with getting rid of it. Your team down by more then a score late in game and they score to get close it won't matter as much.

You can do onside kick in the 4th if you are losing and declare it ahead of time

I don't even like that TV will use even more on field graphics to outline the landing zone. Reminds me more of a video game.

That's dumb having to announce, only 4th quarter and you have to be down.

They have 100% removed the element of surprise.

Before the kickoff rule of 2017, teams had a 20% success rate.
    After 2017, teams had a 6%.
Last year there was only 2 out of 40 attempts.

With it being harder to be successful for many reasons I listed at the start, I doubt we will see one that is successful.

They need to change something so the success rate goes back up.

75% +/- of kickoffs last year were in the endzone, last night all but one of the kickoffs were returned. Will there be more tweaks , certainly, but at least ko's are getting more field action. That said, basically eliminating on side kicks takes an dynamic out of the games. IDK exact stats, but nearly 25 % of the games in a recent year ended in 3 pts or less, a higher % TD or less.

If You’re playing fantasy football be sure to find a ko returner. I think new format will be beneficial for ko returners

The NFL sucks more each year. If I can’t watch the Steelers, I don’t watch much. They throw these “player safety” rules in, but make the season longer. Makes sense.

I didn't see if you could fake an onside kick. Is it still OK to lineup for an onside kick and then kick it long in the 4th QTR?

I've seen the fake work a couple of time as everyone is up front and then with no blockers slowing down the defenders they pin the opponents near the goal line.

I don’t really get what’s prompted this for the onside kicks.

I know the usual thing is “player safety” but I’m struggling to see what the specific issue is with a surprise 2nd qtr onside kick. Too much of a spike in blood pressure???

IF...the kicking team just kicks out the back of the endzone, the offense starts at the 30. If the kicking team kicks into the 'kick zone' the returner usually gets past the 30. ??? Why not just take the penalty then?Put them at the 30 and let's go.

I thought there was onside kicks but it can only be in the 4th quarter and the team has to declare to official their intent.

If it's the 4th quarter and you are still down after just scoring, it seems pretty obvious there's an onside kick coming. Declaring the intent seems pointless and redundant. Can you declare you intend to onside kick and then kick the ball deep? Or is that a penalty?

I don’t think the rule means you have to announce to your opponent your intentions :lolol:

I think they probably just mean you need to check in with an official, like you do when being an eligible receiver.

The first time at the HOF game it was returned to the 26. I have no idea on the others, I think it will provide lanes for longer returns and even more TD's (there were 4 last year), opposing schemes will seek to fill these holes. I for one am not against making the game more interesting, and this makes the kick off more relevant, I just hate that they take away another facet of the game (on side kick). The on side kick for the most part has not been very productive in recent times, but the surprise element that it could be used at any time, and when successful turn the game around is a factor that now is lost.

Is the 4 yards, 26-30, worth the risk of a returner getting loose behind the only line of defense? Risk is give up a long return or score, reward is nothing unless the returner drops the ball. Risk/reward tells me kick it deep and take the penalty. I could be misunderstanding the rules, it happens.
