Did they allow facemasks back then? I assume not but am curious now.

In 1955 they made face masks mandatory.
In 1956, the NFL made a rule that made grasping the face mask illegal except for the runner. Beginning in 1962, the face mask rule included the ball carrier and mandated a 15-yard penalty and ejection of flagrant.

Even into the 90's they used to show penalty plays as highlight reels. Wasn't the Jacked Up segment relatively recent? They used to show some really questionable hits, now I think they only highlight legal ones.
