There were two sets of two players with the same first and last names for the Pirates.

First pair: One played for the Pirates for two years, and hit the most famous home run in Pirates history….most famous for a brief time, anyway! The second was a coach pressed into service in an emergency for four games in the mid 60s. They played the same position and had the same first and last names as each other.

Second pair: One played for the Pirates for three seasons in the late 80s. The second was with the Bucs in the early 90s and if you blinked you missed him. They both also played the same position and had the same first and last names as each other.

Hint: You could make two batteries out of these four players.

    Can you name them?

To tough. I was looking through my second edition Pittsburgh Pirates Encyclopedia. Damn thing is heavy. I love reading about the 1925 WS. I even had a hat made declaring we were 1925 WS Champs. Gets a ton of comments;)

Two catchers with the same first and last names. Two pitchers, also with the same first and last names. All played for the Bucs, but none at the same time.

I have tried to clarify it. If not for one of the first pair of players, Maz would never have had his shot at baseball immortality, and that part is rather unfairly forgotten today.

Because of family I was raised in Football(Steelers, Bears, but I only Love the Steelers).. Pirates fan, and a Cubs fan. I don't love either. I lost my Love for baseball about 38 years ago, but I still watch here, and there.

Ok, I am depriving Steel Machine of sleep, so this must have been too hard. Here is the answer.

The first pair of players were catchers, both named Hal Smith. The first Hal Smith hit a homer in the seventh game of the 1960 World Series, and later Maz knocked one over the left field wall into Schenley Park. This would not have been possible without Hal Smith’s earlier homer.
The second Hal Smith was a coach for Harry Walker, and was activated for four games in 1965 when all the catchers were injured.

The second pair were pitchers, both named Jeff Robinson.

Ok, since I tortured you guys with one that was too hard, here is an easy one, though not Pirates related: Billy The Kid and Smokey The Bear have two things in common.

    What are they?
