Jared Jones pitched a gem, 1 hit and 10 strikeouts in 7 innings. It is a 0-0 game, Holderman in, watch the bullpen blow it and the offense get nothing.

I am pleasantly surprised! They actually held a lead, and got just enough offense to win!
Last I heard Nick Gonzales was hitting the cover off the ball in Indianapolis. Some tough decisions need to be made.

Yeah surprising they held on for a 1 - 0 win. But that won't happen against the good clubs. Gonna be a long year

Jared Jones looks like he will make big money one day. Pirates will trade him for future suck ass prospects.

Climbed out of basement (for a day) and only 1 game out of 2nd place! (OK Brewers/Cubs essentially tied for 1st.)

With Ohtani now with the other LA team and Trout on the DL, Pirates might have a chance this series?

Sounds good. Trout would have ate us for lunch.

My area had two MLB players. Mike Trout is about 40 miles north of me and Matt Szczur hits golf balls next to me. (he's better then me, I know, hard to believe;) He's 5 miles from me. I was glad he was a Cub when they won it all although he didn't make Playoff roster. Kind of like to see Trout get a WS. I have a feeling he will be another Ernie Banks.

Yeah wonder when the last time was that that happened. This pitch count stuff when a starting pitcher is dominant and you remove him for a suspect bullpen makes no sense whatsoever but here we are in modern baseball

In honor of the Gunner, the Buccos won with a bloop (and 2 walks) and a blast (albeit in the 4th inning). :drinks:

Why did they do it? Just to show that it is still physically possible for a human being to do so? Because the bullpen has been so inconsistent that it outweighed concerns for pitching arms?

I grew up watching guys like Koufax, Marichal, Fergie Jenkins, etc., who were expected to complete games. It is true that many pitchers then had buzzards circling their soup bone early, due to overuse, but I don’t like the way baseball does it now.
Koufax, btw, any time he took the mound he was more likely to throw a complete game shutout than to hit a batter. Amazing statistic that we will not see again.
Marichal doesn’t get the respect he is due, probably because his best seasons happened the same years as Koufax’s best, which were better.

Bucs playing the Dodgers in a double header many moons ago. Koufax and Drysdale were their starters that day. I listened to both games with Bob Prince on my little transistor radio. We won both games and I was convinced we were going to the WS just because of that double header:)

I'm a purist when it come to MLB. IMO the DH is just f--king wrong. Takes so much thinking out of the game. Also am not a fan of inter-league play. Will give credit to issuing a walk without throwing 4 balls and speeding up the pitcher is a good thing. Instant replay was needed. No way the human eye can catch those bang bang plays.

One of the few players who could hit Koufax was our very own Roberto. I was at a game at Forbes Field in the earlier 60's and Clemente hit a homer off of Koufax on a line drive over the batting cage stored out (on the field) in center field (454 ft to the wall) that just kept going way out into Schenley Park. Had to be a 550 ft shot. Usually though, Sandy dominated the Bucs as he did to so mnay other teams in his time. Even though the enemy, a great guy and ball player. There were many great ones around that time - Aaron, Banks, Frank Robinson, Mays, McCovey, Mantle, Maris, Spahn, Burdette, Bob Gibson - all baseball cards in the spokes of my bike.

    Hank Aaron wore Koufax out!
There is an interesting story in a book about Koufax, and I hope I get the details right. Koufax’s father (stepfather really) had a heart attack and could not work. Koufax needed money to keep the family afloat, so he quit the University of Cincinnati (where he played basketball, which was considered his best sport) and tried out for several teams to see if he could get a contract. This was just before the draft was established. He was worked out in old Forbes Field, and the bullpen coach, Sam Narron, told management that he was better than anything they had, and to not let him leave the stadium (without a contract). For a difference of some small amount of money, they passed on him and he signed with Brooklyn.
The Pirates could have heisted two all time greats from the Dodgers in a short time period, Koufax and Clemente.

Great story. I remember Sam Narron. I remember sitting in the left field bleachers right behind the opponents bullpen and Joe Torre was one of the coolest players we met/talked with (before he became a star) when the old Milwaukee Braves were in town.

Oh, another part of the story was that Koufaxxthrew so hard he broke Sam Narron’s thumb. There were a number of Narrons who played ball, I don’t remember who was who.

Guess he never caught Bob Gibson and obviously not Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson nor El Chapman (in his prime). Guess our current wonder boy Jared Jones would give him fits as well.

Someone has to go, and I guess Priester is not exactly making a good case for staying in the starting rotation when Skenes comes up, whenever that will be.
Meanwhile, we all have time to fine tune our Paul Skenes tribute pornstaches.

I should trademark the Pitching Pornstache and make thousands of stick on versions to sell.
Years ago, I had a Coaching Chin idea but never did it. It would have been a wearable fake rubber chin, and when the Steelers got a bad call, you would squeeze a bulb and the chin would stick out. It would have been a pisser to see thousands of fans in the stadium all doing that simultaneously.
