How will our offense look under Arthur Smith?

One thing is sure, don't expect many 3 WRs on the field, since the Falcons under Smith only used this formation 18% of the time, which was by far the least in the NFL....The 49ers were 31st at 39 %....The steelers were at 71% last year

Maybe that's a big reason why the Steelers don't seem to be in hurry to sign a receiver right now....

Thanks for this. What’s surprising is Miami being low and KC. I would have thought they would have had more 3 WR sets even with Kielce. The other ones that were surprisingly high were Cleveland, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. You can bet that is drastically going to change for us this year.

I was surprise for the dolphins(at the same time,it make sense since their head coach was a former assistant under Kyle Shanahan in SF) but not much for the chiefs since their WRs in 2023 for much of the regular season with so many drop for so many. For the browns, the injuries on offense have forced them to make some change

The #1 seed in the AFC and NFC are all down at the bottom of the list. You have to click the Show more to see San Fran and Baltimore. If this is a copy cat league, is the modern 3 WR set going away?

And, Atlanta and Arthur Smith's offense was dead last with only 18% of their offensive plays coming from the 3 WR set??? Very interesting for what the Steelers offense may look like in 2024. Maybe the Steelers do not need that extra WR, if they are not going to be running with 3 WRs?

The Steelers base offense, would be 2 TE, 2 WR and 1 RB. Muth taking on the Kyle Pitts roll and not asked to stay in and block as much.

I think what makes Atlanta disproportionately low here was Jonnu Smith lining up as the WR3, with Pitts their TE1.

Their top receiving targets last year were London (110), Pitts (90), Robinson (86), and Smith (70). The next closest WR to London in targets was Mack Hollins with 30.

    This.

If anything, Kyle Pitts really is a WR 1 trapped in a Tight Ends body. For that matter, Kyle Pitts should have made the transition to WR in 2022 anyways. As opposed to going for Drake London in 2022, the Falcons could have opted to go for Kyle Hamilton in Round 1 had Arthur Smith would have made that transition instead. 2022 was a very good year for nabbing WRs anyhow.. so the Falcons could have drafted one later if they so chose to.

Long story short?! Atlana's Offensive Personnel skew Arthur Smiths usage of 3x1 sets very much so given how dynamic a weapon Kyle is.

    I guarantee it.

Pittsburgh has a powerful run blocking TE by the name of Darnell Washington. Between me and you, I believe that Washington is going to explode in year two in a big way. Not entirely based on stats but oh most definitely in terms of production.

I agree. It's only version of what we have already seen many times before.

Yes back in the 60's and 70's every team with the exception of Don Coryell's Chargers didn't have 3 WR's. The lineups back then always had a Split End, a Flanker and a TE as receivers. The backfield always had a fullback and a halfback.

Muth has to stay healthy and we barely have a #1 WR. Pickens is still very much unproven in a lead role. He's gifted, but still very raw and unpredictable. I still think we need to trade for a proven WR.
