They're talking about it because those two positions don't have starters on the roster, Donte Jackson might be their #2 CB to start the season.

 

I think getting one of the top 3 corners in the first round would really solify the Steelers defense, but not having a Center or a #2 WR to prevent the double coverages on Pickens is so glaring. I think the Steelers trade back and draft a Center in the first while getting some draft pics and then try to use that additional ammo to trade back up into the top of the 2nd round and get a top WR, CB or even OT. I don't think OT is as strong of a need with holes at WR and slot corner. With that said, we do have our 7th round Avatar CB coming back from injury who was looking pretty good in training camp last year...but he may not be reliable because he is injury prone.

Problem is ....We can probably get a good Wr later in the draft. We more than likely won't get a good CB late in the draft. A good Qb will make most average Wrs look better. A good Qb will make an average CB look terrible. I agree center should be as high in tge draft as a CB this year

 

I agree with center, but I don't with Wr. Yes we lost a good wr, but We have as many legitimate Wrs as we have legitimate CB.....difference is in most cases You will find great wrs throughout the draft....You won't CB....remember most cases. Also a good Qb will make an average Wrs look better. A good Qb will make an average CB look horrendous.

 

They need a #2 WR I'm not sure you wait until the 3rd to find one, the draft is deep at CB they can get one in the 3rd.

 

I've been reading mock drafts and this one surprised me. A defensive back is not what I'd think we'd take in first round but I saw a mock with us taking Wiggins a DB out of Clemson.

 

Wasn't Puka for the Ram's drafted in the third?

If you take a center in the 1st round they better be a sure thing pro bowl caliber center from day 1.

besides QB - Corner is probably the most difficult to draft successfully in the first round. Maybe I'm wrong about this but I bet the "miss %" in the first round is very high on corners. Unless the corner seems like a generational player I'd avoid taking them in the first round. best player on the board and safest value player on the board is usually : safety , LB, OG, OT, , WR, or DT . A playmaker at Safety, ILB, or WR would be huge for us IMO. 2 great WR's makes things very difficult on opponents and opens up the run game. but if we can't protect the QB then it won't matter. I'm not convinced Patrick Queen is anything but a serviceable player. Queen did nothing until he was playing next to an elite ILB. He does not have that luxury now. A dominant DT would also be a big difference maker for us. Our run defense needs improvement imo and we lack depth on defense.

 

A couple of offseasons ago the group at The 33rd Team took a look at the "hit rate" by position of 159 players drafted in the first round of drafts between 2013 and 2017. "Hits" being defined as any player who got a second contract with the team for whom they played their rookie contract. This also included players like Minkah, who was traded by the team that drafted him but subsequently got a second contract by the team that acquired him, well as guys like Bud Dupree, who didn't sign long-term second contracts, but had their options picked up and were then signed to franchise tenders.



Naturally, there are factors that can come into play anecdotally, but on the whole these seem to follow the general trend shown by similar studies. OL and RB are among the most likely to be retained; S and LB don't fare as well, and WR/CB continue to be high risk, high reward skill positions.

I think the team needs another quality CB, but they have a bigger need at C, while RT and, now, WR are needs as well. I really expected Khan would fill C through free agency since a top-line C costs considerably less than a similar talent at CB, and it would've given them some flexibility in the draft. They've got four picks in the top 100, but four big needs to fill. And that's not addressing depth (DL).

 

Trade down to 25 and draft JPJ . Unless a sure fire Allpro C Trade down. If JPJ gone draft WR or OT then trade up in 2nd for Frazier or Barton. Not many C's get drafted in 1st.

Not a fan of going into the season relying on a rookie C and a rookie #2 wr. Both positions take time to develop. Still hoping we trade for a polished WR. Pickens is talented, but he's still raw and unpredictable. I don't trust him as a #1, at least not yet.

 

WR is one of the easiest positions for rookies to excel at, he won't have the pressure of being the #1 WR.

 

Bad draft strategy. You draft the best player.


Center is a need. But if we are being honest, it's no greater a need than say, WR, T, CB or DT.


What many songs are to recognize is that we are below average at one of our tackle spots. And while it's true we have no current Center, I'm quite certain Daniels can provide middle of the pack Center production if he switches position.

For that reason Center is no more needy than many other positions.
