I am clueless why Justin Fileds could not wear #1?

Justin Fields has worn his #1 for Georgia, Ohio State and The Chicago Bears.

Not sure why the Steelers would have stopped Fields from wearing his #1, when they allow QBs to wear single digit numbers.

What does this mean? So, in the past QBs, RBs, Kickers have all worn #1, so why did the Steelers Stop him from wearing it?
There wasn't much shot at Fields wearing his original No. 1 jersey with the Steelers as the team has only given out the number six times, the last time being in 1999 by quarterback Anthony Wright. The others were kicker Gary Andersen (1994), kicker David Trout (1981), halfback Merl Condit (1940), halfback Warren Heller (1936) and halfback Andy Zeher (1935).

Has Justin Fields commented on why he chose #5?

Steelers didn't want Washington to wear it as well.

My only guess is their waiting for someone special they draft. Or if it's way too not make a player feel they're better than everyone else.

Obviously the Steelers told him #1 wasn't available, Fields jersey number doesn't affect his play so why make a big deal about it?

I have not seen anywhere stating that the Steelers told him "No".

That is why I am wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to ask Fields.... Why Number 5? ......#5 is Alive....

It explains it in the article you provided a link to. It’s about the team, not the individual. It has nothing to do with Gary Anderson.

It’s also not official that he’s wearing 5. Some random local ESPN guy in Chicago doesn’t know and shouldn’t be believed. Fields posted an image today with the only text being a 2. Does that mean he’s wearing 2? Who knows.

They weren’t letting anyone other than QB/P/K wear single digits, but are now allowing Queen to wear 6. Maybe they’ll open up 1 again.

Whatever the shape of the fabric sewn on his jersey is, let’s hope he turns his career around.

I love auto correct. It helps so much!

But I'm confused why it thought to do eatonton instead of Washington.

That's crazy. Hines Ward is in my top 5 Steelers of all time, but 82 and 88 are still available. WTF?

    New team, new everything?

I wore the Bradshaw #12 as a kid. My current gameday jersey is a Woodson #26 in white. I believe Bell, Bleier, and DeShea Townsend also wore #26. It's a good Steelers number.

Agreed! Swann had the perfect last name, a gazelle on cleats. And Stallworth who is one of my favorite players was the lunch pale takin it to the house.

Joe Greene, Franco Harris and Ernie Stautner are the only official numbers that are retired.

Wrong. Anthony Wright wore it. Until someone can produce an actual list or communication from the organization there is no reason to actually believe they “retired” it for a kicker.

You also forgot 43 for Polamalu.

glad you said that, would hate to think it was the fond memories David Trout left for us. lol. As I recall when he took over for Matt Bahr he missed his first two XP tries, but by golly he kicked it through the end zone after kick off, which was an amazing feat after Matt's short kick's. Awe the 80's Steelers, the memories keep giving, eternal indigestion. lmao

If they retired all the great Steelers the NFL would have to allow the organization to start issuing triple digit jersey numbers.
