This is the kind of trivia I really love. How on earth did you find this out, 12to88?

It's something I noticed during my years of buying/selling memorabilia. Here are some screen grabs that demonstrate the lettering on the backs of the jerseys. Though the jerseys are different colors, here, you can clearly see that the letters aren't so spaced apart. The style is slightly different, too.

    Great pics!
I deeply hope that one of these years soon, the Steelers will adopt their 70's style as their throwbacks for the year. They are far better than any uniform they've ever worn in my opinion, and they will sell a ton of them as souvenirs as well.

The answer to my question about the first Steelers player to score in overtime wore one of the uniforms pictured, if that helps!!

Ray Mansfield popped into my head when you first asked the question. I don't know why. Now I see that he is in one of the pictures. So...?

    More odd uniform details:

If you ever buy a throwback Steelers road jersey, make sure the sleeve stripes are correct. There should be six black stripes. Many knockoffs do not include the two outside "border" black stripes. You can see the correct striping in my avatar picture. Something to look at: in his famous Coke commercial, the jersey Greene throws to the kid does not have the correct striping. Just an interesting note. It obviously wasn't a real, team issued jersey they used for that commercial, and whoever created that prop didn't pay attention to details.

Another error often made with throwbacks: the numbers on the shoulders. On authentic jerseys, the style of these numbers is different than what is on the back and front. The shoulder numbers are elongated, and the 2s and 5s do not hook upward on the bottom. If you see ads for "authentic throwbacks" and you see that the shoulder numbers are the same style as the number on the front of the jersey, you know it's bogus.

No, not Ray Mansfield, but a player from the 1970s era scored the points. It's one of the more memorable plays in Steelers history, at least for me, and I'm surprised no one has answered it yet.

Good info on the throwbacks. I personally own over 40 Steelers jerseys, maybe more (!) -most of the old "classic" style ones I bought in the 1980's and early 1990's before they switched the styles. Another thing about the throwbacks- the SB X Bicentennial patch on some of the Mitchell/Ness models is off, as it is significantly smaller than the real thing. I happen to own several of the real patches, and had #45 jerseys custom made with them for myself and Jimmy Allen a few years. (Jimmy still has his Super Bowl IX game jersey, but gave the SB X away to a Boys Club charity auction back in the early 1980's.)

I'm not sure if this is right, but is it Bennie Cunningham? Either way it was an awesome play. :-D

You are correct! Every once in a while I have an email exchange with Bennie and I mean to ask him about it.

Cunningham scored a game winning TD on a flea flicker play in OT against the Browns in 1978. It is a great play and frequently shown on Steelers team of the 70s type programs.

A couple of forgotten things about that win:

What is forgotten about that flea flicker play is that it should never have happened. Larry Anderson clearly fumbled the opening kickoff in OT, recovered by the Browns, but the referees blew the call and said he was downed first. Getting the break, the Steelers drove down the field for the winning TD.

On the last play of regulation- Brian Sipe threw a desperation heave into the Steelers end zone. Tony Dungy, who led the Steelers in interceptions that year, picked it off at the goal line and took it back 60 years, almost going coast to coast with a winning score before being tripped up as time ran out.

Nice breakdown, JA. I have a lot of the games from that season on video, but I don't have that one. It has to be on the top ten list of Steelers game-winning plays. :towel:

    My trivia submission:
What venue in New York state was once used for Steelers training camp? When I say once, I don't mean just once. :smiley1:

I have the game on DVD. Indeed, the Larry Anderson fumble was one of the biggest "breaks" I have the Steelers ever get.

That would be St Bonaventure, I believe, back in the 40s or 50s?

    Great, thanks for the question.

OK, as I am sure you have already surmised, I have a stockpile of what I hope are fairly intriguing and challenging Steelers trivia questions. Here is one of my favorites, I think:

Name the Steelers player who played in a Super Bowl (for the Steelers)- in which the head referee had also been his high school principal?

Note the nice pulling block by the highly underrated Sam Davis, as well as an excellent block by Jon Kolb, on this play.

Bravo- as you can see by my name/avatar- this is a special favorite question of mine. Good work.

Norm Schachter was the referee in SB X, his last NFL game. When he was not officiating, he served as a teacher and then principal of Los Angeles City High, commuting to games on the weekend and returning to the school during the week. Jimmy still refers to him as "Mr. Schachter".

ok, since there is a thread about receivers in this postseason elsewhere, how about this:

Name the Steelers player who had TWO 100 yard receiving games in the postseason for them, but never had one in the regular season?

no. Good try. I don't think Randy ever had a 100 yard game in his career, but he was a very strong #2 TE- and has four rings!
