Most underrated Steeler.

Who is the most underrated Steeler in your opinion. I’m gonna go with Merrill Hoge to start.

 

I have few that I go back and forth on because underrated in what way, media recognition, fan recognition, HOF recognition. I think Mike Wagner or Carnell Lake!

Larry Foote was an excellent player that went under the radar. Ramon Foster was another. Keisel got some love later in his career, but I always thought he was better than he got credit for.

 

Interesting take. I guess we could also say Johnny Unitas. But oddly though if the Steelers didn’t cut Unitas then they probably would have never drafted Terry Bradshaw and this whole Organizational history may have ended up differently.

 

I still use his name as a substitute for cursing occasionally

I'll never forget him going off in that playoff game in Denver! That is still one of my favorite seasons, due to the improbable way it played out.

 

James Farrior. Nationally he definitely didn't get the recognition, and even among Steelers fans, he was definitely overshadowed by Troy, Smith, Harrison, Hampton, and Peezy.

I'm going to get killed, but the guy was a decent, if unspectacular QB for us. His numbers look comical now in the context of today's game, but except for his rookie year when he was 17th in the league in passer rating, every year he was in the top half of the league in passer rating and he did get us to a SB.

Edit: At the end of the day, he's the only QB not named Terry or Ben to lead the team to a SB. That has to be worth something.

 

Farrior was easily recognizable. He was a tackling machine and signal caller.

NOD was not underrated. He was just an idiot at the very worst time.

 

The question posed in the OP was not "who was", but "who is" the most underrated. I'd say considering everyone craps on him endlessly that he "is" underrated.

 

NOD was the master at dumping down to a 5 yard out pattern when it was third and 7 and then we had to punt

Sure it made his numbers look good but he was not a winner

 

I was going to say Farrior too. While I agree that he was recognizable to most avid Steelers fans, I would say he didn’t get the acclaim of some of the other stars on those great defenses.

Farrior was ol’ dependable. Rarely was injured and was an anchor for the center of that defense. Frankly, I think with his retirement, our ILB problem began and slowly got worse over the years.

 

Ward.

 

Nice to see someone mention Willie Gay. DeShea Townsend is another db. Cedric Wilson was a great part of that 2005 run, rarely gets mentioned. Keith Willis.

Gerry Mullins. Although, it was nice to see him named to the Hall of Honor this year.
