How Expensive is our Defense now? Offense gets a Vet Minimum and Defense adds 2 over $10mil each

I tried to defend the most expensive defense last year, but this year is getting ridiculous.

You trade away Johnson to save $3 million on his roster bonus, and then bring in an average CB making over $10 million.

Typical Steelers thinking, Trade away players on offense to bring in players on Defense. Right now, the cost of this defense has to be way up from last year compared to the offense. 1 vet minimum player signed on offense, and 2 over $10million players signed on Defense.

I don't know if Tomlin plans to die on this hill, but is there anyone on offense making over $10 million now? And after the Queen signing and Jackson signing, how many players on defense are making over $10 million. I just don't think you can win like this.

Anyone got a link that would compare our current Defense's Cost to the Offense. History making number?

Could you just stop? You haven't been right about anything this offseason. You owe some guy named Vito more than you made last year on the Wilson signing. You are one of the most negative posters I have ever seen. You're like a Ravens fan trying to badly pretend to be a Steelers fan.

LOL... You are such a a Cleveland Browns fan!!!

Oh, and I guaranteed the Steelers were not going to trade for Russell Wilson, and the did not. I never thought that Denver would just release him though and ruin my betting streak.

Andi I will admit that I am pissed at Khan for trading DJ, and not picking up one of those Centers on Monday.

A lot of the draft resources have gone in to the offence since about 2021 with Harris, Pickens, Pickett, Pat F and Brod Jones all being picked in the first two days of the draft so naturally the offence is cheaper, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the first two picks are on offence again this year at T and WR

financially, DJ for DJ was an even trade. Click on the links in other threads. Like the one Blast Furnace has.

trading a starting WR for a starting CB for us makes sense, especially in a WR rich draft coming up.

Dang calm down chicken little. We still have the possibility of restructures, extensions, cuts, etc. plus free agency is just getting started and the draft is coming up. Settle the **** down and let it play out.

The defense has not played like we pay it for a few years. It has flashes of brilliance in a few games where it carries us to a win and when the offense finally started playing at end of the year, the injuries made it pathetic.

Most of the offense is on rookie contracts. And we just got a potential HOF QB with Denver paying the tab. I swear... some people LIVE to complain.

he is a bit of a clown, it appears. We are spending $$$ now where we have to. it will level out in time

another child poster here. I get tired of it

who gives a rats bottom about 50/50 spend. Heyward is gone in a year - a BIG credit coming

    that levels it out.

We just took DJ's future $$ off the books.

    no linemen make big $$.

    again, a clowns post.

The Steelers actually just added a $40M piece to the offense. We are only paying $1.2M of that. See, winning.

We aren’t paying a franchise qb 40 million a year. You’re crying over spilt milk.

The trade with DJ was more of a wash than anything. Last year of contract, disgruntled and quit on some plays while his vocal discontent could very well become a locker room cancer. The monetary cost in the trade is negligible, the CB if healthy will be better than they had (not saying much). To make this trade I would thing Omar has something in the works, we will see.

The lack of C is a bit perplexing, I think Morse would have been a great signing, while even getting one of the top C in the draft, it takes the burden off of HAVING to start immediately, he was here, they apparently tried, it did not work. Could have been money, but the thing we forget it is FREE agency, at 32 maybe Morse he wanted to end his career in a warmer environment (among other things), we will never know. Bottom line, evidently the business side of finding the right C did not fit in either sides vision. Have no idea what they do, but the C position is an anchor for Smith's type of O scheme, the plan is there, can they find the right guy,

That last line also speaks on what they could have gotten for DJ on trade simply for a draft pick. Some one may have bitten, but the value some see is simply not there, spending draft capitol on a one year player, who you might have to re-sign for even bigger bucks, when you can get as good or better production for 3 or 4 years on the cheap is often not worth the risk.

Its interesting to see how teams use the CAP, strategies and such, The big jump this year actually helped teams like KC, they were able to keep Jones, and restructureed Mahomes to keep some others. In the present it works and keeps them very relevant for another run. Somewhere however that money will have to be accounted for.If you have the talent and do it right, it's worth it, I do think we lost on some bad decisions, all teams do. The level of $$ on either side of the ball has little to do with results, it is more in the draft process, development, and then retaining the right core. I think the first two are where we have really missed the last years of Colbert's reign.

Nobody was trading for Wilson. That was never a real possibility, so predicting they wouldn't was meaningless. The way I remember it, the way you posted it suggested you didn't think they would get him at all, but I could be wrong about that.

I'm not happy about missing on all the centers, either, but inside linebacker was a big need and Queen was the best player available.

I don't think it's Tomlin's fault that the most expensive positions are either on Rookie deals or have some odd situation that allows them to make the vet minimum:

QB - Vet minimum (Another team picking up 38 million dollars)
    RB1 - Rookie Deal
    TE1 - Rookie Deal
    LT - Rookie Deal
    WR1 - Rookie Deal

Those are the 5 most expensive positions (in no particular order) typically on offense.....I'm not sure why this is an issue.

Cowherd opened up his show today talking about the Steelers overspending on defense.... while letting DJ go. Again... Cowherd doesn't have the whole story on a situation. DJ quit on plays, overrated, was a locker room distraction and dropped a lot of passes. Steelers can get a good WR in free agency and the draft is loaded with good, cheap WR talent on rookie contracts.
