i was reading that the commanders are not going to have him starting next year and may be up for trading him. the article was saying they may do it for a 3rd. would he be worth maybe giving them our two 4th's for howell? i thought at the time he was the guy we were targeting two years ago. he did throw a lot of picks but he also threw for a lot of yards and TD's. i think some of that was the commanders playing from behind a good bit. would he fit well with smith in this offense. we need some bodies in that room with kenny. thoughts?

If we are going outside org for another quarterback do it through the draft. Forget other teams castoffs at the most important position on the field

Personally I don't want to use ANY draft picks for any QB. If he was released sure.

They need to build this team up in several positions in the draft. The trenches being first and foremost. A Corner and Receiver as well. A QB can be had in the 6th or with one of the 4ths.

It would probably be a 3rd at the most.
Sam is getting a raw deal... but that is what happens with new ownership and new coaching, and a new front office.
Sam threw 21 TDs and 21 Picks.... not a good stat.
He had a crap offensive line which got him sacked a lot, and they never had a 100 yards rusher.

I don't think Sam is a good fit here, though he is mobile and can run the ball exceptionally well.
    I just don't see a fit here.
I think Pittsburgh needs a clean slate. They want to give Kenny another shot and that pretty much dictates that they find a Vet that's capable of starting should plan A go awry.
I think Tannehill and Brissett are two options that fit.
Mason is a step down but can work.
I can't see Cousins or Wilson.. but of the two Wilson would seem more likely.
Fields is a disaster waiting to happen, but you never know with this team.

do you think howell could knock those interceptions down with a good line and run game in this smith offense? any draft pick is a gamble. howell has time in the NFL. that can go a long way over a rookie.

Howell refuses to give up on plays when he should, which leads to turnovers. He was the same way at North Carolina, and he played behind a horrid offensive line in Washington.

He is tough and athletic with a great arm, but if they trade for him, they need to let him compete with Pickett for the job. They shouldn't add him and another veteran.

I'm not sure they want to tie up so many resources in the quarterback room.

to me that would be a win win. we only have one right now. giving up two 4th round picks if that's what it took would be cheap for two 3rd year qb's with many starts under their belts. the vet could just add to development of these two. the competition level would be high between them. which i think would be a good thing. both are still on rookie deals as well.

I'm not sure what veteran is going to come in as a third stringer. I also think two fourth-round picks is a bit much for Howell.

    It's tough to say.
It is really hard to play the position when a defender is in your lap almost before you get the ball.
He had some really nice throws and actually had some comebacks.
I think though, toward the end of the season, the team was giving up.

I just don't see Pittsburgh as a good fit.
Denver might be a really good fit.. Payton would give him the Brees workover. Pittsburgh just doesn't have that.

I could actually get on board with this. The Steelers were EXTREMELY high on him from what I hear after his junior season but his senior season was a bit of a disappointment.

He reminds me a little bit of Baker Mayfield and would be excellent competition for Kenny.

Mayfield is a great comp for Howell. He's a tough dude, but he really needs to learn when it is time to throw the ball away.

No. He’s a turnover machine. Definitely not the kind of QB you want if you’re going for a ball-control offense.

I recognize that I’m in the minority here, but my answer is unequivocally yes. I went through the pain of watching a few of their games last year specifically to watch Howell. He played too much hero ball, but if you watch the games start to finish you’ll see that he really had little choice. I think a lot of his mistakes could be eliminated with a capable O line, a better running game, a defense that doesn’t keep putting him in a situation of needing to play catch up ball and better receiving weapons. I think he was easily in the worst situation of any NFL QB last year. In a good situation I could see him having similar success to what Mayfield had last season. Just my unpopular view from watching games.

I haven't watched as much of their games, but I agree with your take on Howell. He was put in a horrible situation. My primary concern is that I don't know if he can learn to stop playing hero ball. That is what got him into trouble at times in college, too.

i too watched a few of those games as well. i actually picked him up later in the season in my fantasy league. i had kenny early. i also had goff. i also think i see a lot of mayfield in him. i saw things in a similar way elvis. i would be on board with adding him and i think if they would go for our 2 4th's i'd be pretty happy with that seeing how by the 4th they are a crap shoot anyway. we would have a qb, that we know and it would make those two picks credible i believe.

If Pittsburgh decided to make such a move... wow..
    Pickett is 2022 RD 1 #20
    Howell is 2022 RD 5 #144

I 'think' it is going to cost us a 3rd to get him.
It definitely sends a message to Kenny. Good/bad/indifferent.. I'm not sure yet.
When Howell plays with the lead, he is a different QB.. So many of those Washington game, he was down 21 in the 1st QTR.

It would be a risk move.
I would hope they did actually watch the games before deciding on making such a move.

Really only in his 3rd year when the talent around him was reduced. I mean, he does have some gunslinger in him, but I think it could be the right amount of gunslinger with a team around him.

I would want to kick the tires, he is a tough son of a gun.
Needs to learn ball security but would push KP and whoever for
Starting QB playing time. I hope they bring him in for QB competition.

I'm with you with "playing from behind".

I like the kid, but I didn't see anything that showed he had a higher ceiling than what Kenny has. (And I'm a fan of sitting Kenny for two years. ).

Where is this coming from. I think Washington is in the same boat as the Steelers, with them only having their young QB on the roster, while their backup from last year is a free agent.
