It's the truest thing about sports - the losing team beats themselves way more than the winning teams wins. It's what made the Patriots - they hardly ever beat themselves and almost ever team they beat usually made stupid mistakes and decisions that killed them.

It's absolutely stunning how so many coaches blow games instead of just staying out of the way and how many players simply choke under the slightly amount of pressure.

Bosa said it postgame - turning point in the game to SF was going for it up 24-10 instead of taking the FG.

True, and do you think a Tomlin run team would reach that level. Are they fundamentally sound, disciplined, where the other team feels pressured to go for seven, instead of settling for field goals??

Yep. And they lost by 3. Good decision making, "COY"!

Absolutely. Before this evening, I might have considered Tomlin as the most situationally inept coach in the league, but Dan Campbell left no doubt about who wears that crown tonight.

They should fire their HC immediately

Just saw this comment on X:

Dan Campbell drawing an 18 in blackjack and telling the dealer to "hit me"

I don’t think Tomlin is anything like Campbell though. Mike try’s to win games 6-3 so he is ultra conservative. Campbell was just awful tonight.

15 years ago, with Cowher's team. I guess a decade and a half of futility is truly the STANDARD!!!!

Here's the other thing. Even though I would have taken the 3 like Campbell did at the end of the first half, it would have made more sense to go for the TD on 4th and goal in that instance given his two decisions to leave six points on the table in the second half. For the love of God, take the damn points!

They might have, I didn't hear. I just know Campbell's name was out there as a candidate.
 To go for it on 4th and short. In FG range. TWICE!

Just like Bosa said, the coach cost the Lions that game on that decision. I totally agree with the theme in this post. Shanahan and Reid seem to be the ONLY two coaches in the entire league who fully understand the game (i.e. clock management, situational play calling, etc.). How is it that many players on the field along with many fans and sports announcers have a greater understanding of these fundamental football concepts than do almost every HC in the NFL? Mind boggling!!

Campbell keeps making decisions like these, he'll end up going the way of "Riverboat Ron"!

Stop the Cowher’s team garbage. The GM drafted the players. Do you remember Cower from 1992 till 2004? The losses, the pain?? It happens but no one was complaining that he didn’t know whet he was doing. Cowher finally won because of Ben as did Tomlin. If Reid retired, the Chiefs would still win. It’s about the personnel.

When Cowher took over, it was 12 years in-between SBs and Cowher didn't inherit any of Noll's personnel from the 80 team. The majority of Tomlin's 08 SB team were Cowher's players from a couple of years back. Just look at the decade 2010-2020, I would argue that the Steelers from a talent standpoint, had the best team the majority time in that decade and had one SB appearance and one conference final to show for that. Major Underachievement imho

Again it comes down to turnovers, and not making plays ( Detroit wr)
;needs to Catch the ball . Detroit was still in game and was regaining
Momentum. I have not seen alot of Detroit's games but Dan Campbell's
coaching ideas leave me wondering what he maybe thinking? Apparently
Detroit mgmt and fans must be ok with it?

Apparently he is big on analytics and the numbers say to go for it in both situations. It’s not like it was a surprising move by him since he went for it 30 something percent of the time during the regular season. I understand going for it the first time, but the second was one of those must score points situations. That was foolish no matter what the numbers say imo.

I think both were no brainers to kick. The first one occurred after the 49ers drove the field, but then had to settle for 3 to cut it to a two-possession game. A Detroit field goal neutralizes the 49ers’ hard-earned field gold and reclaims the 17 point margin. It’s hard to say for sure how that would have affected the 49ers players psyches at that point, but the 4th down stop definitely put some spring in their step.

An 8-8 team, you mean today's Steeler standard of a non losing season.
