I get a little frustrated with comparing coaches, because there are so many variables.

For example, cajun, you note that Cowher cleaned house and rebuilt the team. Which is absolutely true - and he did it spectacularly.

But as you say, Tomlin had a superbowl team. So what was he meant to do? Clean house? I would say that at that point, we needed someone who could steer the ship. What we didn't want was someone who was going to come in, install the Tampa 2, mess around with a solid core of a team and take us back into the wilderness.

The ship went off course because (amongst other things) the transition between that championship team getting old and new blood coming in has not been smooth - for a number of reasons. Some bad decisions. Some bad luck. Some events that could have fallen either way and didn't fall to us. I would agree with is that his choice of staff has not been stellar so far, but I'm hoping this improves with experience - which so far seems to be the case.

I'm not uncritical of Tomlin. But I basically agree with everyone else who is saying that looking at season record alone is not a good basis for installing a new HC. If we miss the play offs next year, I still think he has another year or two to right the ship, so to speak.

    LOL at this thread.

    And after ONE 8-8 season.

You people are ridiculously spoiled and don't even know it.

The only reason I brought Cowher into the discussion is because of others. Tomlin was in a unique situation coming in. I agreed with his keeping of LeBeau and not switchinng to a tampa-2 style defense. I too don't think he'll be fired if we go below .500 next year. But with the talent level on this team and 8-8 season followed by a sub-.500 season his personnel decisions from players to asst coaches has to be looked at and he has to be held accountable and to what degree is debateable.

I don't believe in bad luck and what are the events that didn't fall to us that could've gone either way.

This is a funny thread, bro.

If the Steelers are below .500 and Mike Tomlin gets arrested for assault & battery, then yes.
If there is a whole host of injuries including the franchise QB (which he obviously can't control), then no.

LOL!!! Why did everyone want Tomlin to come in and fix what wasn't broke? I think his humility in NOT changing things just to change them deserves credit, as does the success he's had during his time as HC. Dick Lebeau...are you saying Tomlin should have gotten rid of him? Arians...I think people appreciate him now! This idea that Tomlin is just kicking back and enjoying the fruits of Bill Cowher is HILLARIOUS!

Why don't we just throw Chuck Knoll's stats in to be fair! If we do that, Knoll was an absolute FLOP. The guy didn't produce ANY hardware for over 5 years!!!

That's convenient ;) Fact is, that's an awful stretch by Cowher (among Steeler fans standards).

I see that stated on this board all the time and I'd tell you I think that's just fan bias talking. On Defense what used to be our primary talent is now too old, slow and injury prone. On offense other than a few key skill position players (Ben, Heath) we're young, inexperienced and just flat out not very good in the non-skilled positions (offensive line). In many games our guys are being physically beat and you simply can't just coach / scheme your way out of that. Injuries this past year made a bad situation even worse relative to the talent that was on the field. Looking back on the year I'm actually surprised we weren't worse than 8 - 8 and even more surprised we still had a shot at making the playoffs at the end of the season.
