They can place the transition tag on Mason I think, Mitch should be the first player cut in the offseason.

They can cut up to 2 players before then (March) with a post-June designation. They just don't have that money available until after June. It is in the CBA to benefit the players to be available for FA while money is still out there and the teams to spread the hit out.

With a post-June 1 designation, a team is required to carry the player's full cap number until June 2 even though he is no longer a part of the roster. The player's salary comes off the books at that time unless it is guaranteed.

Thats more than I knew lol..which goes to show while the CAP number is there, it can be pretty fluid if a team manages it correctly.

yes big number, but did you not tell me last week he is a FA? Not a dig or challenge, just not sure when those tags can be used or on whom.

not sure what I said or not RE him - but yes, he is RFA. as a FA, there are 2 tags that can be used - Transition Tag and Franchise Tag.

not worth $31M, that is for sure - at least not worth that today......

UNLESS he throws 9 TD's here in the PostSeason and we hoist #7 in February!!!!!

Yeah, Mason would need to have a Super Bowl run like Flacco did to get that kind of money.

Mitch will be released before March of next year with a “we want to thank Mitch for his contribution and wish him and his family best of luck”.

That is a lot of money for a guy that has been the 3rd string QB for several years. Even if he wins a few playoff games. He just does not have the game history to justify such a high salary IMO. I really hope he does well and he ends up getting paid next year after having been mister grey man in the background for so long. But I think the transition tag amount is too much. I could see him getting a contract closer to what Trubisky has.....something in the 4 to 8 million a year range and a 2 year contract. On the high end of that and maybe a bit more if he does well in the playoffs.

I think Rudolph should stick around. I’m sure he is tired o setting on the bench. Right he play well as our QB. Playoffs, I hope he does well against the Bills plus I really don’t he would be any worse than Pickett. Those last 3 games plus some got us in the playoffs, don’t think Pickett could have done it. After watching him for 2 years no way.

I am not sure how the rules work. Can you designate some a post June 1st cut, and not pay the March $1 million Roster Bonus?

Post June 1st cuts save $2.3 million against the 2024 Cap, by pushing it into 2025.

Yes. The main drawback is you don’t have the savings until after June 1. But they will need that much money for rookies and contingency anyways

    Yes to What?

Do the Steelers have to pay Mitch Trubisky his $1 million roster bonus if they make him a Post June 1st cut when Free Agency begins?

Yes= they would have to pay him all bonuses due until June 2nd.
Still this requires a team to carry a player until June on the roster. During that time the player may earn an option bonus, roster bonus, workout bonus, etc…increasing his dead money and making the June 1 worthless.

I don't like the Over the Cap figure , because it does not include the $1 million roster bonus the Steelers would have to pay in march.

Mitch's Pro Rated bonus of $2.3 million plus his roster bonus of $1.00 million is $3.3 million in dead cap space not $2.3 million.

If cut Post June 1st, the Rooney's will have to cut a check to Mitch Trubisky for $1 million in March. Do they really want to save cap money in 2024 by pushing it to 2025? The final out of pocket increases by $1 million if he is not cut before the roster bonus is due.

No that part of the article is describing waiting to cut until June. They can cut in March up to two players and designate them Post-June 1, as described below.

Generally, they would want to push it out since the cap is rising so the same amount of money has less of an impact and it provides more flexibility now. Further, if they don’t use the cap space in 2024 it carries over to 2025 so it is a wash but you had it available if necessary for late signings due to injuries.

What a team is allowed to do is declare a player a post June 1 cut and get the benefit of the June 1st salary cap treatment while also avoiding any offseason payments or guarantees from kicking in.

The QB problem is the biggest problem facing the team. More than tomlin, more than ILB, more than OC, more than safety, more than OL. But it's not an easy fix.

The big difference between bills and steelers is at the QB position.
