If the last few weeks of the season and the first weekend of playoffs teach anything, it is that you need a quality backup QB, or at least a serviceable one you trust. Rarely does a QB last 16 games, and you need to be able to plug someone into the offensive system that can at least run the same system. Maybe that would permit coaches to not play QBs when they are clearly injured. Heck, I would even consistently give backups snaps with the first team in practice, and some time during games that are out of reach, either in victory or defeat. Not sure where to get these folks, as there aren't even 32 quality QBs in the league, but this would seem to be a key element to success in this injury-riddled league.

Also argues for a quality running game that can be relied on if your passer goes down. Even though it is a pass-happy league, when your QB is hurt or rusty, running the ball would make life much easier.

i think most of the problem is they don't run the backups enough to have them ready to play , when at practice. lefty said he never threw to our starting receivers since camp when he had to start that game. what???????? i know time is at a premium but 15 min. a day? come on.

    Good point...
But what teams actually have what you would consider a "Quality backup"???
I`m more inclined to think a good running game is a better substitute, than a "backup qb", if your 1st string qb goes down...
But, A good O-line, helps that running game get going.
We MIGHT have that, IF all our recent draft picks pan out, and stay healthy...
But we sure haven`t for a while..
Just my 2 cents... Shouldn`t spare them, since, I`ve been told more than once, that I don`t have much sense...;)
Also, I`ve gotta say Mac Daddyo has a good point that he has been harping on, for a while now, about our o-line... Maybe our 1st string qb, don`t go down, if he ain`t hit as much...
Yeah, I know Ben is Ben... But Haley really was changing that, `till Ben got hurt...
Hard to find good backup qb`s...
    Rb`s are a dime a dozen...
The guys that open holes for `em, and protect yer #1 qb, is where you should focus.
And we have... Unfortunately, they keep droppin like flies, too...
    Where is the answer???
I agree with Mac. The games are won in the trenches.
There is a damn good reason that is a cliche... Because It`s True!!!
But when those guys keep getting hurt, what can ya do??
I really thought we did a good job of at least keeping Max Starks around, Havin Ramon Foster there to pick up the slack, when Colon inevitably went down... Hell, Even renting Flozelle "Hotel" Adams for a year, wasn`t a bad move, born out of desperation...even if he did have a bad habit of holding, at the worst times.. who on our line hasn`t had that problem, besides Pouncey???
This year, it looks like it`s gonna be up to the kids to get the job done.
I for one, hope they can, but I`m not real confident, based on the luck we have had recentley..
Here`s to hoping our luck finally changes, and we have a decent healthy line for the entire year, next year!:herewego:
That could go a LOONNGGG way towards fixing our problems on Offense, if it does happen.
In short... What Mac Daddyo has been saying for a long time now!:this!::bowdown::cool:

Yeah, but saying that and getting one an entirely different matters. When a back up looks decent then they are scooped up as a starter.

I remember watching the Bills in the '90s. Frank Reich was a mediocre starting QB, but was amazing when he came off the bench behind Jim Kelly. (Think of that playoff come-back against the Oilers.) We probably need someone who has shown quick-thinking and success in the college game, but recognizes that he don't have the talent/measurables to be a starting QB in the pros.

Did no one ever know that a good backup QB is essential? Every team is one hit away from needing one.

Both our backup QBs were former starters.

Here's the thing: it seems to me that you have the choice of drafting a rookie who shows promise, and then banking on them being ready for the big game if and when called upon. Or you snap up an ageing veteran who's lost out to a younger buck but still has something to offer if and when called upon.

I would love us to take a young QB in the draft, but as someone said above, if they're not getting reps then they'll be sitting around rotting like Dennis Dixon did.

I guess there is a difference between needing/having one and actually using them or getting them ready to play. I think it is the getting them ready to play and using them when needed where most teams fail.

During the game against KC Gruden started talking about how backup qb's get no reps with starters after training camp.

    This

and tebow freaking sucks! Yeah he's great guy, works hard, and he'll even make a big play every now and then. Whatever, we need a backup qb not a media circus. He'll go down to Jacksonville, wallow in mediocrity for another year or two, and then disappear(finally).

I am sure the team is well aware that a good backup qb is important. I am equally sure that the team thought they had two going into the season. Turns out they were at least partially wrong. I can understand making that mistake once, but if they go into next season with the same two guys...

I would love it if Tomlin explained all future off-season roster moves only in terms of their theological significance.

Matt Moore. He's the guy we need. The best backup QB out there in free agency.
