    Jets talking to Khan

The Jets will interview Steelers chief contract negotiator Omar Khan for their general manager vacancy on Thursday.

Khan's official job title is listed as "director of football and business administration." The 35-year-old has been with the Steelers for over a decade and is known as a salary cap guru. That's exactly what the Jets are in need of after Mike Tannenbaum's colossal financial mistake with Mark Sanchez. It's Khan's first known interview this offseason after being a somewhat hot commodity last year.

Well crap. I suppose it was bound to happen though. I was always impressed with Khan considering he started at 25 years old, with one of the top franchises in sports, in a hugely important role. I think I was working a temp job at 25.

It is tough too because this is a very important off season with big needs as far as reworking contracts.

No way Khan takes that job, he'd just be a figure head, you'll be working for Rex. They've been talking about this all day here in NY, no one worth their salt will take that job.

Well, he interviewed with the Seahawks a few years back, and interviewed for the Rams last year. One of these times he's inevitably going to move on. I don't think he'd interview unless he was interested in the job. I believe I read that this is like the 11th or 12th potential candidate the Jets have reached out to, so hopefully they go with one of the many other suitors.

I think it reflects badly if you turn down interviews, at least that's what I am hoping. If he is going to take a job, I sure hope for his sake he picks a better landing spot then the Jets.

You don't turn down interviews, reflects badly on you, you also go for the experience. I'm not saying he's heading there saying no way in heck I am going to take this job, just saying why you don't turn down interviews. I still don't think he will take it, that organization is a train wreck and they just handed the keys over to Rex, Khan wouldn't even have power over him.

I guess the jets haven't looked at our Cap headaches, he would fit right in with the rest of the mess.

Leverage, even if you don't want the job. If you are highly sought after in your field it puts your employer on notice but not Ina grandstanding way. Just says others think I have value and they are interested... Now you are capable of negotiating from a position of leverage. I did it, got offered more $ from my employer but not more than the interviewing company... So I took the better paying job.

Somebody help me understand this. Khan is a GREAT numbers cruncher and a cap wizard. So....what makes everyone think he'll make a great GM who must be able to identify and evaluate talent to ensure the success of your franchise? Just wondering and I know some of my knowledgable MB friends can give me the rationale.

most likely because he has worked for the steelers front office for 10 years. he's around and part of the success and strategy that goes into running the team here. GM's don't just make all these picks on their own. thats why there are scouting departments, guys ahead of player evaluation, coaches, owners all are involved in bringing in players. the owners have an idea of what they want out of their teams and GM's. being a number cruncher is certainly not all he does all year.
