According to Mark Kaboly's article for The Athletic, this is the eighth time in 15 seasons that the Steelers went into the final game of the season needing to win and get some help to get into the playoffs. Of the previous seven, they only made it twice.

The most recent time that they made it was Roethlisberger's final season, which led to them getting their asses kicked by the Chiefs. The other time they snuck in with help was the 2015 season. That was the year the Bengals took two stupid penalties at the end a playoff game to put the Steelers in range for the game winning field goal, then the Steelers lost to the Broncos.

and you know WHY we need help? I won't answer that, most of you are smart enough to know.

    well......I can't help myself.

Go back and look at (Many of) those seasons and look at the games they WASTED, losing to LOSER teams, because they took them lightly, laid the proverbial egg. another of my Tomlin gripes over the many years.....

In some of those cases, yes, that's exactly what happened. This year is one of them. I know they had a bad run of injuries, but Tomlin just didn't have his team well-prepared for consecutive games against 2-10 opponents and it will probably cost them a playoff berth.

It happened this year because they kept playing Trubisky.

To All the outsiders that look at us like we have 3 heads for wanting Tomlin gone. Well this is a huge problem. Losing to all the bottom dwellers puts us here once again.

That year we had a fumble from Toussaint against the Broncos in their territory (with the lead I believe). We had a real shot at going pretty far that year, though going on the road to New England in the post season never really worked out for us across our history. Good team, unfortunate in the injury department.

Trubisky should have been pulled for Rudolph at halftime of the NE game at the very latest and started the Colts game. Chances are we’d just be playing for seeding this weekend.

The fans who are satisfied to be in contention for playoffs yearly are gonna be happy this weekend.

They will have tons of stories to tell their grandkids about how Steelers almost made the playoffs in the final weekend year after year, but some other team missed a FG or XP to knock the steelers out.

The last 5 times the Steelers missed the playoffs they were the final seed not to get in. 4 times they were the #7 seed and last year when the league went to 7 teams in the playoffs the Steelers were the #8 seed.

Yeah, I think this is where we are supposed say that Mike Tomlin is a great coach for getting us in the hunt again.

WOAH, woah, are you saying that Tomlin may deserve some blame for the dumpster fire first half, two-thirds of the season that allows him to appear to be the COY that pulls the team together? I wish it was that easy at work. I'd torpedoe all my projects and then the last two days ride in to save the day, get a big bonus, promotion and raise. Unfortunately REAL managers tend to take note of poor results and last minute saves and you're lucky if you retain your job in the end. Tomlin should be the same. He SHOULD Be on the hot seat STILL, not given an extension. I figured he'd pull a job saving miracle that will doom us to perpetual dumster fire/fringe playoff team that can't scare anyone for the next 10 years. It is the new standard after all.

"Mike Tomlin, head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers professional football team. Lauded for rescusing the team, season after season, from a dumpster fire with no known cause. Tomlin is setting a new standard for the Steelers by allowing all the players to get a few extra weeks of rest in January and February and the players are grateful. The future HOF coach is well thought of around the league for allowing all the other teams to win playoffs games. Most teams have him as permanent honorary assistant coach for the work he does in Pittsburgh improving their own teams. Kudos to Mike Tomlin!"

The Steelers look like locks in week 12 and then collapse every year and need a win and a prayer the last week to make playoffs. Gee , I wonder who should be the one to take the blame. MT simple as that. We are not a threat even if we make it.

When was the last time the Steelers were eliminated before the last week of the regular season? They mentioned it on TV during last year's playoffs, And it was some crazy double digit number

Losing Bell and Williams was brutal. Yes, they had the ball in Denver territory and the lead when he fumbled.

I think the Steelers would still need the win or some help, but at least they would control their own fate.

It's only happened twice in the last 20 years. In 2006 during Cowher's last season and only once under Tomlin back in 2012.

    so, i had this opinion....in week 12.

could not score more than 3 in a first half, no more than 16 - 19 a game, w Kenny as QB

    but now....

Mason and Co. (notice I add Co, as in a renewed running attack and WR's that are showing LIFE!) have RACKED up some points.

Get some players back on D - Minkah primarily - and we can beat half the AFC playoff contenders.

    Colts, yes
    Texans, yes
    Jax, yes
    Rats - maybe / yes.
Cle - tough, but maybe, yes
    Buff - tough, but maybe
    KC - tough, maybe
    Mia - same.

Our D is not too good, that is something that is not discussed very much......
